1 Defining America: Art in the 1800s By: Jordan, Casey, Ryan, Ryder, Amber, Dillon Period APUSH

2 Introduction  The maturing American environment was exemplified through the exquisite art that showed unexplored wilderness and the jobs of everyday people living in the time.  American nationalism was represented by the grandeur and beauty hidden away in the American frontier.

3 Hudson River School  Founded by Thomas Cole  Painted landscapes of American wilderness  Sought to preserve wilderness and wildlife it was the early form of modern day PETA

4 Thomas Cole  Born: February 1, 1801  Learned Painting from traveling painter in Ohio  Along with Asher Durand founded Hudson River School

6 Rocky Mountain School  A group of artist with a common interest in landscapes.  Focused especially on the west and Rocky Mountains  Romantic Realism

7 Albert Bierstadt  Art represented westward expansion in 19th century  Saw his art as majestic and representational of the beginnings of America.  Traveled through the west, painted what he saw.

11 George Caleb Bingham  Born: March 20th, 1811  Genre Painter  Focused on images of westward movement and manifest destiny

13 William Sydney Mount  Born: November 26, 1807  First painter to display slaves in a respectable way  Believed in states rights to decide on slavery

15 Conclusion  Thus the formation of the American identity was illustrated through the evolution of artistic expression in the early 1800s.  The American spirit was defined through the art that joined together the populous and presented the unknown wilderness of the American west.
