3. Phillis Wheatley (c. 1753-1784) Born in Africa (probably Senegal), Wheatley was captured and sold into slavery. Unusually for slaves, she was taught to read and write (in English, Greek, and Latin!). She became the first published African-American woman poet. (biography.com)

4. Frederick Douglass (1818?-1895) Born into slavery, Douglass escaped and became an important abolitionist and writer. His autobiography helped publicize the atrocities of slavery and is an American literary classic.

7. Nat King Cole Cole was the first African- American to host a network television program, but NBC was unable to find sufficient sponsors because of the racism of the 1950s.
