3 The beginning  The Civil War started in 1861 between the northern states (The Union) and the southern states (The Confederation).  The war was started over differing opinions on whether or not the government should be able to regulate slavery in the territories that had not yet become states.  The northern states did not want slavery where as the southern did.

4 Advantages North  More troops  Owned most of the railroads  Stronger Navy South  More skilled soldiers  Some of the most successful military officers in the country  Fighting for their homeland, strong reason to fight

5 Important battles  First Battle of Bull Run  Fought in Washington D.C. and was the first major battle of the war. The Confederates came out as the clear victor.  The Battle of Antietam  This battle was fought in Maryland and is known as the bloodiest single day of the entire war. This battle only lasted one day and ended in a draw.  The Battle of Gettysburg  Known by many as the turning point in the war. The north won and stopped any hopes of southern advancement into the north.

6 The end of the war  General Grant successfully cut off General Lee from retreating to North Carolina forcing Lee to surrender.  The surrender took place in 1865 at Appomattox courthouse in Virginia

7 The Aftermath  The Civil War had many effects on the entire country  Slaves were now free but were still treated horribly as things like the Jim Crow laws were put in place  The southern economy was ruined where as the northern economy had a huge boost from the war  There was more animosity between the north and south even after the war had ended.
