2 Understanding by Design (UBD) A Curricular Model that maximizes student understanding by looking at outcomes to guide the instructional planning. “Backwards Design” because of the process it follows. Wiggins & McTighe (2006)

5 1. Identify Desired Results We take what is important to know and do and look deep for the enduring understandings. What goes beyond the basic facts of the situation. PA takes these and builds the curriculum around them. You can also take them to develop essential questions: no right answer, uncover answers, engaging.

6 Project Archaeology Enduring Understandings Understanding the human past is essential for understanding the present and shaping the future. Learning about cultures past and present is essential for living in a pluralistic society and world. Archaeology is a way to learn about past cultures. 7 2. Determine Acceptable Evidence The assessment portion of Project Archaeology is rooted in “authentic assessment”. Use a repertoire of knowledge and skills. Allow appropriate opportunities to rehearse, practice, and consult resources, obtain feedback on performance, refine performance and products. Project focus builds on deeper understanding versus basic skills and facts A Bonus  Can align directly with objectives/standards

8 3. Plan Learning Experiences and Instruction Utilize sound pedagogical strategies and tools. This is the art of teaching and instruction. REMEMBER  You are designing lessons that prepare your students for the authentic assessment and the enduring understandings. These drive your instruction, not the other way around.
