3 Wall Basics  Most exterior walls are framed with 2x6s because they are the primary weight bearing walls of the house. Additionally they need the extra space for the insulation of the house.  Interior walls are framed with 2x4s because they aren’t weight bearing, and they don’t need insulation.  Most exterior walls are framed with 2x6s because they are the primary weight bearing walls of the house.
