3 Bell-Ringer 1. What is the purpose of an operating system? To organize and control hardware and software so that the device behaves in a flexible but predictable way

4 Bell-Ringer 2. At the simplest level, what two things does an operating system do? Manages hardware and software resources Provides a stable, consistent way for applications to deal with the hardware

5 Bell-Ringer 3. What is the single function of the bootstrap loader? It loads the OS into memory and allows it to begin operation.

6 Today Log on to the Pearson web site and set up an account. Using the online textbook, complete the Lesson 1-1 Graphic Organizer, "What Is a Computer?" Using the online textbook, complete the Chapter 1 Vocabulary Review.

7 Go to the site http://www.pearsoncustom.com/us/introcomp/ Click on Register

8 Click I Accept

9 Under “Do you have a Pearson Education account?” Click next to No

10 Create a login name and password. Choose something easy to remember. Fill in this access code: DSSCNB-CHOLI-CYNIC-PLUMB-NADIR-ADOWA

11 Enter First Name, Last Name, and Email Address Select United States

12 Enter 23666 for School Zip Select “Other” for School Name Type in Bethel HS Type in Hampton Select Virginia

13 Select a Security Question and enter your answer Leave this un-checked

14 Click on Log In Now

15 Click on OK

16 Click on “Enroll in a Course”

17 Enter the Course ID from your worksheet

18 If it shows “Shultz ITF” followed by your class block, click on Confirm If it doesn’t, ask for help

19 Click on the Class Name

20 You should now be on the “Today’s View” screen. Click on “Course Materials”

21 Click on Introduction to Computers and Information Technology – Chapter by Chapter

22 Click on Part 1: Computing Fundamentals

23 Click on Unit 1: Exploring Computers

24 Click on Chapter 1: What is a Computer?

25 Click on eText – Chapter 1

26 Click on Go to eText
