Figurative Language Figurative Language does not mean what it says.
It paints a picture in the reader’s mind. The author uses figurative language to emphasize something. It is often funny or shows a lot of feeling.

Literal vs. Figurative Literal language means what it says.
Amelia Bedelia is very literal. She always does exactly what the words say.

Figurative Language Ms. Garcia gave me a thousand pages of homework. (It really means; Ms. Garcia gave me a lot of homework.) Chill out! (It really means; relax.)

Figurative Language Examples
That test was a piece of cake. (It really means that the test was easy.) I am dying of thirst. (It really means that you are really thirsty.)
