Notes: The design will stay consistent throughout the presentation. A sepia-tone picture frame. Available at http://www.free- power-point- templates.com/sep ia-powerpoint- template/ http://www.free- power-point- templates.com/sep ia-powerpoint- template/ The audience is adult learners who are licensed drivers. This slide is the Model T photo and title page for the presentation. Animation (yes or no): no Text/Audio Narration: The last new “original” Ford Model T was built in December, 1927, over 80 years ago. If you came upon one, which is NOT that unlikely as over 15 million were manufactured, would you know how to start it? Title: Starting a Ford Model T Scene (opening page) – title page Graphics (yes or no) : yes Audio (yes / no): yes Slide number: 1 Skill or Concept: n/a (intro)

Notes: (labeled pictures fly in to random spots, numbers across screen with boxes for labeled pictures to fit in) This slide is a diagnostic assessment of the knowledge of the proper sequence for starting a car. The major points are: 1.Make the car safe – parking brake on, transmission in park or neutral. 2.Key in ignition 3.Turn the ignition on 4.Turn the engine over 5.Release the key when the engine starts If the learner gets the steps in proper sequence, go to slide 3. If any are wrong, go to worked example of starting a car on slide XX. Animation (yes or no): yes Text/Audio Narration: Let’s start with a modern car. Do you know how to start a car? Put these steps in the proper sequence. The tone of the narration is intended to be friendly and comfortable, conversational. This personalization provides instruction giving credit and respect for existing knowledge, which also makes the gap to the new task manageable. Title: Starting a Ford Model T Scene: Start car sequence Graphics (yes or no) : yes Audio (yes or no): yes Slide number: 2 Concept: start car sequence

Notes: This is a pre- training slide to develop new concepts based on existing knowledge. Bring in pictures of the parking brake on a modern car and the Model T. Show the video of the parking brake being engaged on the modern car with voiceover describing what is happening. Then show the video of the Model T parking brake / hand lever being engaged with voiceover explaining what is happening.. Animation (yes or no): yes Text/Audio Narration: Because you know how to start a modern car, you know most of what it takes to start a Model T. Let’s go through each step with the modern car, then the equivalent action with the Model T. First, make the car safe to start Title: Starting a Ford Model T Scene: Compare and Contrast Model T and Modern Car Graphics (yes or no) : yes Audio (yes or no): yes Slide number: 3 Skill or Concept: Equivalent parts

Notes: This is a pre- training slide to develop new concepts based on existing knowledge. Bring in pictures of the ignition switch on a modern car and the Model T. Show the video of the key being placed in the modern car with voiceover describing what is happening. Then show the video of the Model T key being inserted with voiceover explaining what is happening. Animation (yes or no): yes Text/Audio Narration: After the car is safe to start, the next step is to put the key in the ignition. This is almost identical in the Model T and the modern car. Some modern cars don’t have keys that go into ignitions now, but most do. Title: Starting a Ford Model T Scene: Compare and Contrast Model T and Modern Car Graphics (yes or no) : yes Audio (yes or no): yes Slide number: 4 Skill or Concept: Equivalent parts

Notes: This is a pre- training slide to develop new concepts based on existing knowledge. Bring in pictures of the ignition switch on a modern car and the Model T. Show the video of the key being placed in the “On” position (NOT start) on the modern car with voiceover describing what is happening. Then show the video of the Model T key being placed in the Battery position with voiceover explaining what is happening. Animation (yes or no): yes Text/Audio Narration: After the car is key is in the ignition, the next step is to put the key in the ON position. This is almost identical in the Model T and the modern car, except the Model T position is named “Battery”. The model T starts on the battery, but it runs on the generator after starting. That step is for later. 6 Notes: This is a pre- training slide to develop new concepts based on existing knowledge. Bring in pictures of the ignition switch on a modern car and the Model T starter button. Show the video of the spark advance on the Model T, move it from the RUN position (down) to the START position (UP). Use text over the video to show START–UP and RUN-DOWN. Animation (yes or no): yes Text/Audio Narration: The next step is to start the car by “turning over” the engine with the starter. On the Model T, there is one extra step before engaging the starter. You have to manually set the spark advance to the fully retarded position, which makes the car start better. On your modern car, the spark is automatically adjusted. The spark advance is on the left side of the steering column, where your turn signal control is located on a modern car. It can be up or down, and the mnemonic is “START-UP” and “RUN-DOWN” – to START the car it is UP, when the car is RUNning it s DOWN. Title: Starting a Ford Model T Scene: Compare and Contrast Model T and Modern Car Graphics (yes or no) : yes Audio (yes or no): yes Slide number: 6 Skill or Concept: Equivalent parts

Notes: This is a pre- training slide to develop new concepts based on existing knowledge. Bring in pictures of the ignition switch on a modern car and the Model T starter button on the floor. Show the video of the modern car key being placed in the “START” position with the noise of the engine turning over and voiceover describing what is happening. Then show the video of the Model T starter pushbutton being pressed with a foot with the noise of the engine turning over and voiceover describing what is happening.. Animation (yes or no): yes Text/Audio Narration: The next step is to start the car by “turning over” the engine with the starter. On the Model T, the starter button is separate from the ignition switch, on the floor by the driver’s left foot. Title: Starting a Ford Model T Scene: Compare and Contrast Model T and Modern Car Graphics (yes or no) : yes Audio (yes or no): yes Slide number: 7 Skill or Concept: Equivalent parts

Notes: This is a pre- training slide to develop new concepts based on existing knowledge. Bring in pictures of the ignition switch on a modern car and the Model T starter button on the floor. Show the video of the modern car key being released to the “ON” position with the noise of the engine running and voiceover describing what is happening. Then show the video of the Model T starter pushbutton being released with the noise of the engine running and voiceover describing what is happening.. Animation (yes or no): yes Text/Audio Narration: When the engine starts, release the starter. On the modern car, you release the key and it returns to the “run” position. On the Model T Ford, you remove your foot from the starter button. Title: Starting a Ford Model T Scene: Compare and Contrast Model T and Modern Car Graphics (yes or no) : yes Audio (yes or no): yes Slide number: 8 Skill or Concept: Equivalent parts

Notes: This is a pre- training slide to develop new concepts based on existing knowledge. Animation (yes or no): yes Text/Audio Narration: When the engine starts, you have one extra step on the Model T Ford. You have to move the spark advance from the START(UP) position to the RUN(DOWN) position, Now you are ready to drive. Title: Starting a Ford Model T Scene: Compare and Contrast Model T and Modern Car Graphics (yes or no) : yes Audio (yes or no): yes Slide number: 9 Skill or Concept: Equivalent parts Show the video of the spark advance on the Model T, move it from the START position (UP) to the RUN position (down). Use text over the video to show START–UP and RUN-DOWN.

Notes: This is segmentation, with the learner controlling parallel videos of the modern car and the Model T starting. There is selectable modes for step-stop (stop after each key step) and continuous run mode. There should be an alternate version of the final production with subtitles in lieu of voiceover, for those who might be hearing impaired. Bring in two parallel videos, one of the Model T and one of the modern car starting, with the modern car video stopping in the two Model T unique steps (advancing and retarding the spark). The learner can select step-stop or continuous run, and can also select audio on or not. Animation (yes / no): yes Text/Audio Narration: Title: Starting a Ford Model T Scene: Parallel steps – Modern and Model T Graphics (yes / no) : yes Audio (yes / no): no Slide number: 10 Skill or Concept: Model T start

Notes: This is a worked example for parallel problem solving. Bring in two parallel videos, one of the Model T and one of the modern car, where neither car “turns over” (when the starter button is pushed and the ignition key is turned to “start”). The question “what do you think the problem is?” transitions into view. Multiple answers fade in, including: battery; ignition switch; parking brake, I don’t know. Each is linked to additional information, except “battery” which links to a “correct” overlay and applause. Animation (yes / no): yes Text/Audio Narration: What if you have a problem? What if the car doesn’t start? Title: Starting a Ford Model T Scene: Problem solving – Modern and Model T Graphics (yes / no) : yes Audio (yes / no): no Slide number: 11 Skill or Concept: Model T start

Ignition switch “Battery” position “On” position

Ignition switch “Battery” position “Start” position

Quiz #1 Select the true statement The Model T starts in the “Battery” position The Model T starts in the “Magneto” position

The Model T starts in the “Battery” position CORRECT The battery provides power, even when the engine is not running. The magneto only provides power when the engine is running.

The Model T starts in the “Magneto” position Incorrect The magneto is a generator driven by the engine. It only makes power when the engine is running, so to start the Model T, the switch must be in “Battery”.

Quiz #2 Select the true statement The Model T starts in the “down” positiondown The Model T starts in the “up” position position

CORRECT The Model T starts in the “up” position The spark advance is in UP to START. Remember: START – UP Move to the DOWN position is after the car is running. Remember: RUN – DOWN.

Incorrect The Model T starts in the “down” position To START the spark advance is UP. Remember: – START – UP DOWN is for RUN. Remember RUN – DOWN. IF the spark advance is down, the kick back from turning the crank can break your wrist or arm, or damage the starter.
