1 Teller Amendment At the start of the Spanish-American War, the U.S. passed the Teller Amendment. It said that once the war with Spain ended, the U.S. would NOT annex Cuba (take control of it). Instead, it said they would “leave control of the island to its people.

2 Platt Amendment In 1901, the U.S. replaced the Teller Amendment with the Platt Amendment It said the U.S. could interfere in Cuban affairs whenever it saw fit. Naval base at Guantanamo Bay established. In 1934 the US renounced the right to interfere in Cuba.

8 Roosevelt Corollary In 1904, President Theodore Roosevelt added the Roosevelt Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine. It gave the U.S. the right to intervene in the Caribbean and Central American countries that were in debt. This was known as TR’s “Big Stick Policy”
