1. Teller Amendment
At the start of the Spanish-American War, the U.S. passed the Teller Amendment.
It said that once the war with Spain ended, the U.S. would NOT annex Cuba (take control of it).
Instead, it said they would “leave control of the island to its people.

2. Platt Amendment
In 1901, the U.S. replaced the Teller Amendment with the Platt Amendment
It said the U.S. could interfere in Cuban affairs whenever it saw fit.
Naval base at Guantanamo Bay established.
In 1934 the US renounced the right to interfere in Cuba.

5. McKinley Assassinated!
In 1901, President McKinley was assassinated by an anarchist
Theodore Roosevelt became president

6. Roosevelt and The Square Deal
“The Square Deal” was Roosevelts 1904 campaign slogan.
It called for:
Limiting trusts (monopolies)
Promoting public health
Improving working condition

7. One of TR’s greatest legacies is his work for environmental conservation.
He saw how industry was using up natural resources and worked to protect them
He doubled the number of national parks

8. Roosevelt Corollary
In 1904, President Theodore Roosevelt added the Roosevelt Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine.
It gave the U.S. the right to intervene in the Caribbean and Central American countries that were in debt.
This was known as TR’s “Big Stick Policy”
