Angular momentum in -decay theory
3
The angular momentum components pp p pDpD IPIP IDID JLJL Total angular momentum for the two leptons Total spin angular momentum for the leptons Total orbital angular momentum for the leptons
4
Conservation of angular momentum pp p pDpD IPIP IDID JLJL Allowed values Total lepton spin quantum numbers Fermi interaction Gamow-Teller interaction ss s s ss Allowed values
5
Two decay mechanisms In fact, there are -- -- two fundamental interactions -- two coupling constants
6
Two decay mechanisms In general, the decay is a mixture of Fermi (F) and Gamow-Teller (GT) physics If pure Fermi measure If pure Gamow-Teller measure
7
Higher order physics… Lepton wavefunctions -- “Allowed term” “First forbidden term” “Second forbidden term” etc….
8
Higher order physics… “Allowed term” “First forbidden term” “Second forbidden term” etc…. Conclusion: Lowest possible order will dominate -- other orders have negligible contributions
9
Log 10 ft values & forbiddeness… (log 10 ft) values should correlate with the level of forbiddeness in the decay physics. Higher level of forbiddeness larger (log 10 ft) values (c.f., Fig.9.9) Calculated - see graphs and/or tables Depends strongly on Q & Z daughter Measured half- lifetime Always in seconds! (c.f., Fig.9.8)
