3 About My Family  Maternal grand-parents, Olaf &Maria (Haapa) Tarvas lst settlers in Cherry, MN and immigrants from Finland.  Olaf gave the name of Cherry for this community and donated land to the Cherry High School  Olaf Tarvas was an Apprentice Veterinarian and the teamster of the first horse-drawn diamond drill for the new mining businesses.  Maria Tarvas was a homemaker.  Paternal grand-parents, Emma Ollila and Gust Hyrkas were immigrants from Finland. Both settled in Virginia, MN  Wilho Hyrkas, my father, was born and raised in Virginia, Minnesota  Ellen Tarvas, my mother, was born in Cherry, Minnesota  My parents had three children, two girls and one boy. I was the after thought. My mother died when I was nine years old and both siblings were out of the nest after her death. When I turned 13 years old I moved in with my paternal grand mother and took care of her until I graduated from high school. She died two weeks after my high school graduation. After my high school graduation I attended the St. Paul Vocational Institute. My degree work was in Culinary Arts. I married my high school sweetheart in 1973. I married my high school sweetheart in 1973. I was in the banking industry and I was a lead teller at Northern State Bank. During my marriage I became an accomplished golfer winning tournaments during the summertime. During the winter time I was an avid curler and skier. I was a team member of the State Curling play downs. In 1982 our Virginia Lenont women’s curling team was runner-up in the women’s state play downs.
