1 Preventing Kitchen Accidents
A few helpful guidelines

2 6 Basic Safety Guidelines for Working in the Kitchen
1. Focus on what you’re doing 2. Dress for safety 3. Use tools and equipment safely 4. Close all drawers and doors completely 5. Store large, heavy and bulky items on low shelves 6. Control clutter

3 How do we prevent falls? 1.Keep shoelaces tied
2.Don’t wear clothes that are too long 3.Keep floors clear of clutter 4.Wipe up spills 5.Spray oil over sink 6.Secure slippery rugs 7.Repair damaged flooring 8.Use sturdy stepstools

4 Knife Safety Dull knives are more dangerous than sharp ones as it takes more force to use a dull knife making it more likely to slip. Store knives in a divided drawer, a knife block or knife rack. Always clean knives with blades away from you Don’t soak knives or sharp utensils in a sink already filled with suds. Wash Separately!!! Never randomly grab for a utensil in a drawer.

5 Cook Top Safety Grease and bits of food can build up in burners, ovens, range hoods and toasters. These bits can catch fire. CLEAN WELL!!! Arrange oven racks BEFORE turning on oven. Stand to one side when opening oven door when hot. Always use a pot holder or oven mitt, but never a damp or wet one! Clean up spills that might burn. If a fire occurs, turn off heat, smother flame with a lid, another pan, salt or baking soda.

6 Appliance Safety Some plugs are made with one blade wider than the other. These are called polarized plugs and may reduce risk of shock. Never force a polarized plug into a non-polarized outlet. Never use an appliance when your hands are wet or you are standing in water. Don’t run cord around sink. If appliance gets wet, unplug before touching and always unplug before cleaning.
