3 L’Histoire Characterized as one of the six Celtic nations because several Celtic tribes inhabited it. After Caesar's conquest of Gaul, the area became known to the Romans as Armorica However, in the mid 9 th century, Nominoe won a series of victories over the Franks which secured an independent Duchy of Brittany. The duchy was abolished during the French Revolution.

6 Saint Malo A walled port city which was once the home of Pirates Was heavily fortified from English attacks in the north Has one of the highest concentration of seafood restaurants in Europe

7 Mont St. Michel Monastery built on a rocky island Built from the same stone as Saint Malo Between Normandy and La Bretagne The statue of Archangel Saint Michael sits on top During the French Revolution became a prison for political opponents

8 Quimper Center for pottery production ever since it was a part of the Roman empire. The people of Quimper are of Celtic origin and thought to be the founding fathers of La Bretagne. Faïence The most popular pottery depicts everyday life in Brittany.

9 Brest Used as a disembarking port for USA troops during WWI. Best known for Pont de Recouvrance, a 210 foot bridge that stretches across the river Penfeld. Oldest monuments are Chateau de Brest and the Tour Tanguy. The Tour Tanguy is a medevil tower that faces the castle Not many monuments due to bombing in WWII.

10 Nantes Historically part of La Bretagne, but now the capital of the Pays de la Loire region. Popular food is wine, seafood and cheese. In 1789, the separation of the historical provinces of France resulted in Brittany being split into 5 parts. Nantes landed in the Pays de la Loire region. Before the abolition of slavery, Nantes was the slave capital of France. Sights include many churches and museums.

11 Les Festnoz Means Night Festival Dancing festival Music is made with instruments such as the Breton bagpipes, the hurdy gurdy, the clarinet and the violin.
