2 1.Login to Digimap, select Historic Digimap > Ancient Roam. 2.Search for L3 4AA. 3.Select 1920s. 4.Zoom in to Street View 2, on the Custom House (North East of Albert Dock, highlighted on image). 5.Select 2 up view – compare 1920s with 1950s. Return to 1up view (1920s map). 6.Open the Annotation tools, select the polygon tool. 7.Add a polygon over Custom House (1920s map). 8.Click Save > My Map. Name it Custom House. 9.Write down what map series, edition, scale and date you are viewing – click the information button then click on the map: * Map series ---------------------------- * Edition ------------------------------ * Scale ------------------------------------ * Date ------------------------------ 10.Finally, open Roam Ordnance Survey and view your Custom House map – select Open > My Maps. 2 Recreate map of central Liverpool:

3 Create a file to import to Ancient Roam: Find and double click the file liverpool_WWII_bombs.CSV. It should open in Excel. Note the Custom House line has no coordinates – let’s add them. Go back to Ancient Roam. Select Open > My Maps and open your Custom House map. Open the Map Information panel (to left of map). Hover your cursor over Custom House. Note the Cursor Coordinates (first is Easting, right is Northing). Enter the coordinates on your liverpool_WWII_bombs.CSV file, in the Custom House line. Save and close the CSV file. Go back to Ancient Roam. Let’s open our file. Select Open > Annotations from file. Click Browse, select your memory stick, then the liverpool CSV file. Click Open, then Import. Set X as Easting and Y as Northing. On the timeline, display a map from 1950s. Zoom in and view some of the markers. 3

4 Make some Historic Maps Our suggestions: Search using SW7 2AZ. Zoom into Plan views 1 and 2. What was on the site of Imperial College London (behind Royal Albert Hall, bordered by Queens Gate and Princes Gate) in the 1870s? Compare 2 maps of the area around Coventry Cathedral, pre WWII and post WWII. Search using CV1 5AB. Cathedral is marked as St Michaels Church until 1930s maps. Zoom into Street views. Use your postcode to see what was on the site of your house! 4
