TYPES OF SEISMIC WAVES
2
There are THREE kinds of Seismic Waves
3
P-waves S-waves L-waves Types of Wave Movement
4
Each type of wave travels at a constant speed and creates a
different movement in the Earth's crust. Animations of Earthquake Waves
5
Studying these waves allows scientists to:
- Determine the amount of energy released by an Earthquake (MAGNITUDE) - Determine the exact location of the Earthquake - Create a model of the interior of the Earth
6
P-WAVES S-WAVES L-WAVES
Are the ________ moving waves Move __________ than P-waves Are the _________ moving waves Cause particles to move _____________ in place Cause particles to move from ___________ Cause the ____________ to RISE & FALL like ocean waves Travel through _______________ Travel only through _________ Cause the Travel through ________________ FASTEST SLOWEST SLOWER SURFACE BACK & FORTH SIDE-TO-SIDE MOST DAMAGE SOLIDS-LIQUIDS-GASES SOLIDS SOLIDS-LIQUIDS-GASES (COMPRESSIONAL) (SHEAR) (LONG or SURFACE)

CHARACTERISTICS P-WAVES S-WAVES L-WAVES 1. Travel through gases? 2. Travel through liquids? 3. Travel through solids? 4. Fastest waves? 5. Surface waves? 6. Slowest waves? 7. Cause particles to move back & forth in place? 8. Cause particles to move from side to side? 9. Cause the most damage? 10. Cause the surface to rise and fall like ocean waves?

34. P-waves Fastest type of seismic wave -travels through solid, liquid & gas 50. S-waves Seismic wave that travels only through solids 26. L-waves Slowest waves that travel on the earth’s surface
