 Fire Extinguishers  Types of fires  Selection of Extinguishers  Extinguisher Information  Sizes  Location  Operation of an Extinguisher

 First line of Defense  Extinguish small fires  Knowledge of different extinguishers  Extinguishers make the difference

 Class “A”  Class “B”  Class “C”  Class “D”  Class “K” A B C D

Class “A” fires consist of materials made of wood, paper, plastic etc. A

Class “B” fires consist of flammable and combustible liquids B

Class “C” fires consist of energized electrical equipment. C

Class “D” fires consist of combustible metals. *Rule of thumb: Usually if the material ends in “ium” it is a combustible metal Use of the wrong type of extinguisher could result in violent explosions or intensify the fire. D

K This is a newer classification of fire. Class 'K' extinguishers are specifically designed to supplement fire suppression systems in kitchens. These extinguishers are designed for cooking oil, fat, and grease fires. Look for the letter 'K' symbol or the symbol to the left if you need to extinguish a class 'K' fire.

 What A, B, C, D, and K fires involve  Hazards involved with classes of fire  Selecting the proper extinguisher

 Various size extinguishers  Types of Extinguishers  A  ABC  BC  D  K

 Extinguisher sizes start at 2.5 lbs up to150 lbs  Look for applicable symbol on the extinguisher to insure you have the proper extinguisher.  The effective reach of most extinguishers is about 5 to 10 feet.  Always check the gauge when applicable.

Ordinary Combustibles Flammable Liquids Electrical Combustible Metals B C A D

A, B, C Extinguishers DO NOT use on Class D fires Dry Chemical AC B

BC Use only for flammable/combustible liquids or energized electrical equipment. Purple K – Type of dry chemical Carbon Dioxide (CO2) – Do not use in enclosed spaces

D Extinguishers only for combustible metals. Special purpose extinguishers Contact the fire department for assistance.

 P ull the pin  A im the nozzle  S queeze the handle  S weep the nozzle from side to side

= Pull the pin

= aim the nozzle

= squeeze the handle

= sweep the nozzle horizontally

Extinguisher Location:  Strategically placed  Located by primary exits

 Always approach with the wind at your back  Approach fire from unburned side if possible  Be aware of the surroundings  Always have an escape route planned  Always call 911 if you have a fire, regardless of size

Review:  Classifications of fires  Types of fire extinguishers  PASS  Tips for using extinguishers
