Ephesians 6:16 One way we pick up & carry our shield is by applying the Word of God in normal situations of life (Hebrews 4:1-3). Remember that Bible doctrine is intensely practical as you face monotony & routine in life. God has a definite purpose for your life – as you realize His purpose, humdrum tasks take on zest. You can enjoy life, for you do what you do as unto the Lord! And remember, “faith comes by hearing, & hearing by the Word of God” (Rom. 10:17).

Ephesians 6:16 “with which you will be able” Future active indicative of dunami – anticipates the actual battle certain to follow incessant & careful training. You WILL be able to hold your ground in the face of the flaming missiles of the wicked one. “to quench (extinguish; put out) the fiery (flaming) darts (missile; dart; javelin; arrow)” “from the source of the wicked (ponēros; evil) one” These flaming missiles are things such as fear, worry, doubt, boredom, loneliness, bitterness, disappointment, adversity, prosperity, etc. – your soul is the arena of combat wherever you are at.

The Most Difficult State For A Christian To Achieve Is Happiness (Joy). “Promise” (4:1) – Time Promises (Occupational Verbs).

Hebrews 3:7 – 4:16 The Faith-Rest Life “The Word…did not profit them” (4:2) – it was of no use; of no advantage; of no benefit; of no profit. “not…mixed with faith” (4:2) – knowing AND believing! (Cf. 6:12 – faith AND patience!) “believed” (4:3) – not salvation belief (cf. 3:19). See Ephesians 1:15-21 (especially vs. 19).

Hebrews 3:7 – 4:16 The Faith-Rest Life “the works were finished from the foundation of the world” (4:3) – already done – not dependent on circumstances. “God rested” – nothing else to do! Characteristics of The Faith-Rest Life (4:9-16) 1) Faith (4:10) – Faith, not works (works is prop-wash!). 2) Diligence (4:11) – eagerness – intensity of purpose followed by intensity of effort toward reaching that purpose. We are not to be a lazy bum! Faith-Rest is on the inside, not the outside.
