SERBIA Written By: Sumire Clevenger and Lorae Bonamy

Why did Serbia enter the war? Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia on July 28 th, 1914. Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia because the Black Hand assassinated their heir, Archduke Franz Ferdinand. Serbia was warred on because Austria-Hungary wanted to prove their authority over the Serbians. (The Causes of WWI, n.d.)

Short-Term Effects Russia pledged to protect Serbia, which caused them to be involved in the war. (The Causes of WWI, n.d.) Austria Hungary issued an ultimatum to Serbia with 9 demands and gave them 48 hours to reply. (Austria-Hungarian Ultimatum to Serbia, n.d.) Serbia was not willing to accept the terms of the ultimatum, causing Austria-Hungary unrest and causing Russia to declare war on Austria-Hungary. (Austria-Hungary's Ultimatum, n.d.) ("Gavrilo Princip," n.d.)

Long Term Effects The Serbian army lost 125,000 soldiers during the war. The Kingdom of Serbia lost 650,000 people which was over 27% of its total population. 5 Long-Term Effects Continued The creation of Yugoslavia was an effect of WWI. Yugoslavia was formed as a kingdom od Serbs, Croats and Slovenes after Austria-Hungary was defeated (Yugoslavia, n.d.). ("Yugoslavia Flagmap," n.d.)

Five Themes of Global Studies Global Interrelatedness: Serbia’s interaction with WWI caused the entire world to get involved in this war. The entire world played a part in this bloodshed. Utopia and Terror: War is a terrifying concept to begin with. People were most definitely afraid and even if they disagreed, they could not speak up about it. War was declared on Serbia to make the flow of life more peaceful, because the Austria-Hungary Empire wanted Serbia to know their place.

Themes of Global Studies Cont. Identity and Difference: Gavrilo Princip shot Archduke Franz Ferdinand because he wanted to stand up for his identity, he wanted to stand up for the people who were like him and who thought like he did. Although in our opinion, he handled things the wrong way, he exemplified identity and difference.
