3 Entrance to Higher Education Admissions to higher education are arranged by means of University Entrance Examination (ÖYS) organised annually by Student Selection and Placement Centre (ÖSYM)

4 Turkısh Higher Education System Higher education consists of four main levels of education : Associate Degree  vocational high schools Bachelor’s Degree  schools and faculties Master’s Degree  graduate schools Doctoral Degree  graduate schools

5 Associate Degree Designed to provide practice-oriented technical education, 2 years of study.

6 Bachelor’s Degree Faculties and schools 4 years Bachelor's degree study Dentistry and Veterinary Studies 5 years Medicine 6 years

7 Admission for Bachelor’s Degree Admission is directly determined by the level of success at University Entrance Examination (ÖYS).

8 Master’s Degree Prerequisites Bachelor's Degree, Examination for Graduate Studies, (LES) Interviews and reference letters Good GPA is an advantage

9 Doctoral Degree... takes different titles for different academic fields: Ph.D. (Doctorade), “proficiency in Fine Arts” “ s pecialization in Medicine (MD)”

10 Admissions for Doctoral Degrees Master's degree An exam (oral and/or written) organised by graduate schools Examination for Graduate Studies (LES) organised by ÖSYM Certified foreign language competency

11 Higher Education Council (YÖK) Established in 1981. Functions: -to coordinate the activities of teaching, education and scientific research -to ensure the establishment and development of universities -effective allocation of resources among Universities

12 Internationalisation in Turkish Higher Education The Higher Education Council attends periodically the meetings of European University Association (EUA, formerly CRE) Head of Higher Education Council has signed Bologna Declaration in 2001 Dokuz Eylül University is a member of EUA since 1990’s

13 Internationalisation in Turkish Higher Education Higher Education Council has principally engaged in the following activities: Dissemination of information concerning internationalisation among universities; Launching the procedures concerning “Diploma Supplement” Promoting the application of European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) to ensure standards and transparency in higher education.
