Comparison and Contrast Essays Writing about Opposites
2
Organization Comparison and contrast essays can be arranged in one of two ways: point-by-point or block comparison and/or contrast. In a point-by-point structure, each point of similarity or difference between two items is compared or contrasted. In a block structure, entire paragraphs are devoted to each item and include all the points of comparison or contrast for that item. Remember to stick to one point throughout the essay. Do not stray from your thesis. Each paragraph should flow smoothly from one to the next.

Elements of a Good Comparison and Contrast Essay Be sure to begin your essay with a clear introductory paragraph, which ends in a clear and relevant thesis statement (statement of purpose for the essay). Follow this with body paragraphs in which you expand upon your thesis statement. End with a strong concluding paragraphs. Proofread your essay at least three times, looking for organization, mechanical errors, and all elements of your particular assignment.

Topics Many topics lend themselves to this type of organization. Think of two topics with similarities, differences, or both. Some examples of items that lend themselves to comparison and/or contrast are men and women, the past versus the present, and good versus evil. Your choice of topic will be dictated by your assignment.

Transitions Transitional words and phrases will move your essay along smoothly. Some transitions that work for comparison and contrast essays are: similarly, on the other hand, however, likewise.
