PROTO Document(s) draft-ietf-proto-wgchair-doc-shepherding- 04.txt Coming document on the PROTO Advisor Coming document on document lifecycle
4
PROTO in a nutshell OLD –WG Chair(s) request publication –Responsible AD takes over all efforts on behalf of document (tracking, advocating, asking for revisions when needed, reporting out review changes, approving, following up during RFC publication)
5
Nutshell NEW: –WG Chair(s) on requesting publication identify one as a shepherd for the document –The shepherd takes on most of the tasks of the Responsible AD (tracking, advocating, asking for revisions, reporting out review changes, etc…) –Responsible AD needs to be cc’d in the shepherd’s work as a check and balance matter, and approval is still in IESG, but work quality and speed shifts to the WGs. –Throwing over the wall is no longer the paradigm. –Teamwork of Chairs, Editors and Area Directors.
6
When? PROTO is an evolution of approaches some WGs already use IESG will request that most groups start using PROTO according to draft However, for some WGs, there may be a preference to stay with a more traditional approach –TBD by the Area Directors –Example would be where the document(s) written by the WG Chair
7
PROTO Steps Publication Request –Writeup submission (Section 3.1 of document) –This includes information that AD can use for background of AD Review (to speed review) and also the draft of the “announcement writeup” –Note one question concerns possible appeals and should be sent under separate cover (3.1.f)
8
AD Review and Discuss Review These are similar; the WG Shepherd ensures that the Editor quickly responds to all comments on the document. –Timeliness and completeness –Coordination of all parties –Maintaining the document’s integrity
9
PROTO Advisor With a new widespread practice, we expect questions, ups-and-downs, but want this to succeed, so IESG is appointing a PROTO Advisor to encourage: Team member with expertise, Dave Meyer. –Will contact PROTO Chairs on entry of a new document –Will be available for questions –Will report to community at intervals on takeup, nature of questions
10
Conclusion PROTO is for the working groups Documents energy is your energy Best energy for getting them to the finish line quickly is also your energy PROTO lets this be a team effort Questions?
