2 Area Repeaters Many repeaters in our area already Many are mobile only coverage Megalink – Wide area coverage (VHF) Cactus – Wide /wide closed system coverage (UHF) County & State ARES systems 146.610, 146.980, 147.180* All these are large coverage systems

3 Pros of these systems Wide area comms when needed Extended coverage areas Flexibility to talk almost anywhere in the state All provide a very important and good service

4 Cons of these systems Few areas with solid handheld coverage in building or in populated areas (Roswell, Artesia, Carlsbad) Not suited for long term ‘rag chewing.’ Can be difficult to keep conversations local Local performance is sometimes traded for wide area coverage

5 The Solution- SERS SERS – Southeast Repeater System An alliance of local repeaters and groups to provide solid local area coverage in the Southeast metro region. Handheld in-building coverage in Roswell, Artesia and Carlsbad, mobile coverage Riverside to State line.

6 SERS – The Origin The demise of the 147.180 left a huge gap in service other systems can not fill. The need for a reliable local system is apparent.

7 147.180 – A Review Has been a key repeater in the area Located on the Caprock, ~1200 feet HAAT Outstanding local coverage Marginal in-building / metro coverage Intermittent problems since early 2011 Went silent aprox. August 2011

8 147.180 – A Review Efforts to access the site for repair are ongoing. However, it is not clear when or even if this will be possible.

9 147.180 - Temporary 147.180 temp up in Roswell until recently Provided great local service Temporary 147.180 to be the foundation of SERS at a new site.

10 SERS – Phase 1 – Wide Coverage 147.180 to be installed at a new site on the Caprock in Feb or March of 2012. Wide area service will begin –147.180 / 147.780 – 100HZ TX/RX Expected mobile coverage Riverside to East State Line and beyond

11 SERS – Phase 2 – ROW Local 146.640 will join the system Will remain the NMMI club repeater and retain its call sign 146.640 will provide local area service for low power and in-building users in Roswell.

12 SERS – Phase 2 Cont. 147.180 / 146.640 will be normally linked Additional system features will come on- line at this time: –Echolink / IRLP / VoIP Internet access –NOAA Watch / Warning broadcasts –Enhanced NET mode features and control –Notices and announcement broadcasts –Local weather information announcements

13 SERS – Phase 3 Artesia will be added to the system Repeater T.B.D. looking for an Artesia partner System should provide service to Artesia in-building and low power users. Wide Area, Roswell and Artesia will now be connected with all features.

14 SERS – Phase 4 Carlsbad will be added to the system Repeater T.B.D. looking for an Artesia partner System should provide service to Carlsbad in-building and low power users. Wide Area, Roswell, Artesia & Carlsbad will now be connected with all features.

15 What’s Next? After these areas are on-line, system growth will stop. We don’t need another Megalink.

16 What if the real 147.180 comes back up? Option 1: Trustee of the 147.180 may elect to join the SERS system and the temporary 180 will become an off-line backup repeater for 180. This will extend coverage. Option 2: Temporary 180 will change frequencies and remain in SERS. 147.180 will remain a stand-alone repeater.
