© XchangePoint, 20001 What we are doing n XchangePoint is building, and will provide and operate: n Well funded n Neutral n State of the art n Well managed n High capacity and performance n Reliable n Open n Flexible, responsive and customer-focussed Internet Peering Point (IPP) services in 5-10 European cities in the next 3+ years
3
© XchangePoint, 20002 Who we are
4
© XchangePoint, 20003 Internet Peering Architecture n Multiple ISPs locate backbone nodes in single building operated by co-location provider n In-building connections to shared interconnect fabric using ethernet LAN switching technology n Routing information exchanged bi-laterally between peering ISPs using BGP n IPP operator need not be same organisation as co- location provider n Co-Lo will generally have other customers: n carriers, hosting, ASPs, content distributors
5
© XchangePoint, 20004 IPP Advantages n Reduced bandwidth costs n Improved throughput and latency performance n Economies of scale n Single large pipes to one IPP more efficient than many small private interconnects to many ISPs n Critical mass of ISPs in single location creates competitive market in provision of capacity, transit and services
6
© XchangePoint, 20005 Peering Points in Europe n Most countries have at least one n mainly to keep domestic traffic inside country n Top 5 exchanges n keep European traffic inside Europe n London, Amsterdam, Stockholm, Frankfurt, Paris n 50-100 ISP participants each n switch typically several hundred Mbps to several Gbps traffic n Not in general congested n Traditionally early adopters of next generation Ethernet
7
© XchangePoint, 20006 Our Differences & Strengths n VC funding n for-profit n €9M in place now n Growth-oriented n Pan-European n one-stop shop across multiple cities n Multiple Co-Location providers’ sites in each city n Fast Provisioning n Neutral...
8
© XchangePoint, 20007 XchangePoint’s Neutrality Principles n ISP and Carrier Neutral n we will not compete with our customers n we will not move traffic between cities or countries n CoLo Provider Neutral n present at 3 CoLo sites per city n partner with multiple CoLo providers as customer n choice of CoLo sites for our peering customers n VC ownership is Neutral n Service provision will be Neutral n We will not enter into exclusive arrangements
9
© XchangePoint, 20008 Our Implementation Strategy n We want to partner with existing IPPs where possible & appropriate: n assett transfer/purchase n exchange of equity and/or cash n outsourcing arrangements n distributor arrangements n co-operative agreements n Important to keep co-ordination and dialogue channels open in evolving market n We are building, and will build IPPs from scratch where above is not possible and there is a need
10
© XchangePoint, 20009 Planned Roll-Out n First Round Sites n London n Paris n Second Round Sites n Frankfurt, Munich/Hamburg n Geneva or Zurich n Milan n Proposed Sites n Brussels n Madrid n Copenhagen n Amsterdam n Vienna
11
© XchangePoint, 200010 Roll-out Schedule
12
© XchangePoint, 200011 Roll-Out plans n Prefer to partner with small number of pan-European CoLo providers n First site Redbus Interhouse - live ! n Harbour Exchange in London n pilot service available now n Telehouse London during April n Global Switch London during May n Redbus Paris late summer n Looking for customer feedback on further locations
13
© XchangePoint, 200012 Architecture Overview n 2 “Core” nodes per city n 10 racks n 2 Extreme BlackDiamond switches n 2 or more “Basic” nodes per city n 5 racks n 2 Extreme Alpine switches n Adva WDM equipment at all sites n Dark fibre metro ring connecting all sites in city n Gigabit Ethernet between switches and sites n 10-Gigabit capable Ethernet Switch Metro DWDM Terminal Core Node Basic Node
14
© XchangePoint, 200013 Use of DWDM n Bandwidth multiplication n non-blocking inter-site architecture becomes possible n Provides extra resilience n optical circuit protection n faster fail-over than spanning tree n Improves scalability n Permits multiple logical topologies over single physical MAN n Can conserve switched bandwidth by re-routing high volume traffic over dedicated wavelengths
15
© XchangePoint, 200014 Private Interconnect n Copper and Fibre cross-connect available as a service within Core sites n Can dedicate single wavelength ( ) to private interconnect between two high-volume peering customers n fast & flexible provisioning between sites n reduce limited trunking space issues within sites n -interconnect will be available between ISPs only n not available for within a customer’s backbone to avoid competing within conventional carrier business and maintain our neutrality
16
© XchangePoint, 200015 Ethernet Switches n 2 Extreme Black Diamond 6808i switches at Core sites n 2 Extreme Alpine 3804 switches at Basic sites n Each switch at each site connected to one of two separate overlay networks n Virtual dual-vendor approach n different code on each overlay network’s switches n Dual overlay networks connect at Core nodes n maximum flexibility for high bandwidth interconnect within Core
17
© XchangePoint, 200016 Service Offerings n Copper & Fibre in-building connection n Gigabit Ethernet ports n 100baseT Ethernet ports n Private interconnect n Inter-site interconnect n Gigabit ethernet, STM-4, STM-16 n Out-of-band console access
18
© XchangePoint, 200017 Value-Added Services n Service Level Agreement n rebates for failure to perform n Cisco 7200 Collector router at each core site n Traffic statistics servers n Media converters n Customer dial-in to out-of-band access n via ISDN30/Cisco 3640 n 24x7 pan-European NOC in service 2001 Q3
19
© XchangePoint, 200018 Future Services n These are budgeted for ! n Multicast traffic exchange n banging of switch vendor heads together still needed… n IPv6 n mostly just addressing n 10G Ethernet between switches 2001 Q3 n Start thinking about inter-ISP VoIP interconnect issues n Build team will become R&D team
