Types of Research PE357

Types of Research Experimental vs. Nonexperimental –Cause-effect –Control over DV –Future-based

Quasi-Experimental Lack randomized control group or a control condition altogether Often prospective

Causal-Comparative Research (ex post facto) Seeks cause effect relations IV cannot be manipulated by the investigators

Descriptive Research Attempts to describe systematically, factually, and accurately specific characteristics of interest that exist Precedes experimental research Often uses grouping variables

Is Descriptive Research Qualitative? Often more systematic and standardized Larger sample sizes and not as in-depth Variables are predetermined Data analysis differences

Correlational Research Related to descriptive and causal comparative research Determines whether a relationship exists among variables or to make predictions No cause effect but it is necessary

Historical Research -Hard to categorize -Use of past to understand the present and future -Use of primary and secondary sources -Contains extensive methodology but generally ends with narrative

Qualitative Research -Relies on non-numerical data -Does not attempt control -Reality is constructed – no hypotheses or predetermined variables
