If partners were licensing Windows anonymous with 2003, what are their options with 200? The options are: Windows Web Server on the front end and Windows DataCenter on the backend (provided it remains anonymous) If partners aren’t ready to deploy Windows 2008, they can keep reporting/paying for Windows 2003.

Internet 2008 Windows Web Server 2008 $10 With Windows Server 2008, they will run Web Edition on the front end which is $10 per proc And they can run DataCenter on the back end which is $50 per proc. If they would prefer to deploy Standard/Enterprise instead of DataCenter, they can do that, but they will need to report DataCenter and will need to use Stand/Ent in accordance with the DataCenter anonymous use rights (which means it can only be used for anonymous). 8 Hyper-V: Licensing Free Licensed Guests with Hyper-V
Windows Server 2008 Web No Licensed Guest Windows Server 2008 Standard 1 Licensed Guest Windows Server 2008 Enterprise Up to 4 Licensed Guests Windows Server 2008 Datacenter Unlimited Licensed Guests as you can physically run Small Print Free = free, as included in the price of the host OS with Hyper-V. But you can host as many VMs on any Windows Server that supports Hyper-V as you need. You just need to License above the ‘included’ free licenses. In fact, let’s look at Hyper-V licensing as it’s something that occasionally causes confusion. First of all, with Hyper-V, customers are free to license as many guest Operating Systems as they need for virtual workloads. But since Hyper-V represents a virtualization role, or feature of Windows – targeted at helping customers consolidate servers and tame complexity, Microsoft therefore assumes that each license of Windows Server 2008 with Hyper-V should be able to handle a certain, pre-set, number of physical and virtual workloads as part of the cost of the operating system. Let’s take a look at simple example. Assume that a small business really only needs a single server to meet all of their needs. Therefore, when they upgrade to Windows Server 2008 Standard, they can run as much physical workload on that server as their hardware can handle – just as with previous versions of Windows Server. But let’s also assume that they have a somewhat finicky legacy application that they rely upon fairly heavily. With Windows Server 2008 they can run a fully licensed virtual machine tasked with handling that workload as part of the licensing price for Windows Server 2008 Standard – as Windows Server 2008 Standard comes with an included license for a virtualized guest. Then, as this slide indicates, customers with Windows Server 2008 Enterprise Edition are entitled to run up to 4 licensed guests as part of the cost of purchasing Windows Server 2008 Enterprise Edition. Of course, as the slide indicates, Windows Server 2008 Datacenter edition allows customers to run as many licensed guests as the hardware can handle. In other words, Microsoft assumes that customers are buying Datacenter Edition for their data-center – where they will be running lots of complex workloads that will typically need full isolation from each other. As such, customers shouldn’t have to pay additional licensing feeds just to account for application complexity and isolation – which makes Windows Server 2008 Datacenter Edition an excellent choice as a server virtualization hosting platform.

The SPLA Managed Desktop option allows Microsoft partners to provide managed services on customer premises and with local installed Microsoft licenses on the customers’ Desktop or Laptop This option also gives the partner the opportunity to rent besides Office, Visio, Project applications also the desktop operating system Windows Vista Business (N) Upgrade on the Desktop and / or Laptop it self Requirements: The Managed Desktop option requires the services provider to own and manage the hardware devices that are installed at the end customer site.  It is not possible for the end customer to own the device.  This is because of the potential risk for unlicensed software to remain on the desktops should the end customer and the services providers sever their business relationship When the partner purchases the PC it needs to be preinstalled with Windows OEM licenses of either: Windows 2000 Professional, Windows XP Professional or Windows Vista Business

21 Licensing SPLA Managed Desktop
The Managed Desktop option overrides anything to the contrary in the OEM EULA that says you cannot rent, loan, lease or lend.  What that means is that if you acquire Windows Vista under SPLA, then you can provide it on devices that you then make available to your customers on rental, host or subscription basis.  It does require you to report and pay for a monthly license for Windows Vista Business under SPLA for these devices The license fee includes the right to rent / lease the software and the right to upgrade the underlying OEM Windows Operating System to Windows Vista Business Pricing: Normal SPLA pricing per user / month for Office, Visio, Project (see SPLA price list) Examples: Office 2007 Professional Plus: $13.23 per month Project 2007 Standard: $13.35 per month Separate pricing for Windows Vista Business: $6.72 per month Windows Vista Business media cost: $20.00 Special academic pricing (for schools, universities etc.) is available
