2 6/1/2015 ECE Department 2 Introduction This session will help you to know what to do in case of an emergency To make you aware of what is expected of you while in the lab. Work Alone Protocol Highlights. Give you a Listing of Guidelines to follow. And lastly what possible consequences for failure to follow the guidelines may be taken.

3 6/1/2015 ECE Department 3 In case of Emergency If you are faced with fire/Life emergency situation, Call University Control Center at 492-5555 and identify yourself, state the emergency and what is the location. Unfortunately there are NO phones in any of the Labs. If confronted with such emergency and a staff member is unavailable There are pay phones on the 2 nd floor by the elevators. There is no charge for emergency calls.

4 6/1/2015 ECE Department 4 Expectations Become familiar with work alone protocol, which is stated and posted by the main entrance of each lab. (If missing please notify your lab instructor) Treat the labs with respect and do not abuse equipment. Treat it as if it was your own. Failure to do so COSTS you money (i.e.:Higher Tuitions)

5 6/1/2015 ECE Department 5 Work Alone Protocol Highlights Each Protocol is different in each lab so Please familiarize yourself for the lab your in. Standard information given are: Department/Faculty, Room and Building Location, Lab support Contact and Phone # for that contact person, Emergency Procedures (example), Emergency Phone Numbers. Location of Resources, Hazard Assessment Examples (what type of hazards are expected in the lab you are in)

6 6/1/2015 ECE Department 6 Emergency Phone Numbers 492-5555 University control Center(24Hr); This is for any Emergency: Medical, Fire, Chemical spill. 492-5050 Campus Security (24Hr); For Suspicious persons, But NON-emergency situations. 492-5252 Campus Security (24Hr); General inquiries 492-5563 Campus Safe walk program(Times varies within the year); For Coed escorts on and off campus. 492-4833 Facilities Management Maintenance Desk (24Hr); for Maintenance Emergencies. 492-3549 Department Safety officer/Rep; for assistance as required(Blair Harwood is the Current Safety Officer for ECE) 492-1810 Office of Environmental Health and Safety (7:30am till 4:00pm only); For Information/ Assistance/Advice

7 6/1/2015 ECE Department 7 List of Guidelines NO Eating or Drinking in Lab.(exceptions will be considered between individual classes and their instructors) There are Garbage and Recycling bins in the labs Please use them. (Failure to keep lab clean may cause the entire class to loose lab privileges) No horse play. If using equipment like drill press, soldering stations; please familiarize yourself with the safe operating procedures. If any equipment is found defective please report it to the lab instructor who will take appropriate action to have the situation resolved in a timely manner. In labs where soldering is permitted please solder in areas designated by your lab instructor and follow safety procedures for soldering. DO NOT lay hot irons on the counter tops.

8 6/1/2015 ECE Department 8 Possible consequences In the case of Food and Drink you may be asked to leave the lab until done eating. Severe cases may result in removal of lab privileges. If the offending person is not caught in the act but the offense is serious enough, privileges for the entire class may be revoked (time to be determined by severity of the offense and in consultation with Professor and Department APO)

9 6/1/2015 ECE Department 9 Where to Get More Information During Fall and Winter term Main Reception is open to the Student population from 8:30am till 12:00noon, then again from 1:00pm till 4:30pm. The Undergraduate Electronic stores Room is open from 8:00am till noon then again from 1:00pm till 4:00pm. However there is only one person running this office and he is not always in the room. The stores room tech is there for consultation and for handing out parts on hand for use in the project courses. Procedures for access and procurement can be discussed with your lab instructor or the Electronic service and Stores Technician. Current Stores Technician is Rick McGregor, Phone # is 492-2075.
