2 Page 2 MIPAS QWG #15, ESRIN, 23-25/01/08 GEO-FIT (2D)  The information content about a given location of the atmosphere is gathered from all the lines of sight that cross that location  All the information is exploited by merging in a simultaneous fit the observations of a complete orbit  The (2D) retrieval grid is fully independent from the measurement grid (this feature can be exploited to retrieve with a fixed grid (G-POD proposal))  Interfering TERGET SPECIES are retrieved simultaneously (MTR) GMTR Features

3 Page 3 MIPAS QWG #15, ESRIN, 23-25/01/08 Two-Dimensional L2 DATABASE of the MIPAS main-targets WHAT WE ARE DOING F Create a MIPAS Level 2 database using Geofit Multi Target Retrieval F Create a web page with a user-friendly interface with the database (data availability, quality flags, search engine to extract L2 data wrt time and lat-long…) F Possibility to download L2 results from the web SETTINGS F GEOFIT 2.0 (upgraded version from the MIPAS Special Modes Study) - Optimal Estimation - Regularization (vertical and horizontal) - 5 line of sight for FOV below 30 km - Compatible with RR data

4 Page 4 MIPAS QWG #15, ESRIN, 23-25/01/08 Two-Dimensional L2 DATABASE of the MIPAS main-targets PROCESSING STRATEGY F Full resolution nominal mode MIPAS mission (July 2002 – March 2004) F In the vertical domain the retrieval grid points are at altitudes defined by the occupation matrix F In the horizontal domain the retrieval grid points are vertically aligned at the average polar coordinate of the tangent points of the individual scans F TARGETS: p, T, H2O, O3 (simultaneously with MTR), HNO3, CH4, N2O, NO2 sequentially F ESA L2 data used as initial guess F Retrieval range: 12-68 km F Cloud Index = 4.0 F No regularization, optimal estimation for cloudy sweeps

9 Page 9 MIPAS QWG #15, ESRIN, 23-25/01/08 G-POD proposal F Exploits the independence of the retrieval grid from the geo-location of the observations F This allows to generate homogeneous databases of atmospheric fields F Advantages: - one-to-one comparability between products relative to different longitudes and time-periods - Precision can be achieved in averaging processes over different longitudes and/or time periods F fixed horizontal retrieval grid (5.0 deg.) – allows a direct comparison with ECMWF and climatological models F Status: Code implemented, generation of results G-POD: Two-Dimensional L2 DATABASE of the MIPAS main-targets on a fixed grid
