Special Field Order #15 Former slaves wanted land; they believed their future as a free people was tied to the possession of land Special Field Order #15 was a military directive that set aside a strip of land along the Atlantic coast for freedmen It was supposed to give each family 40 acres and the use of army mules ( “40 acres and mule”)
