Chapter 1-Industrial Geography Mika Kania
2
Industrial Geography Rational for industrial geography rests on geographic unevenness and constantly changing geography of manufacturing activity It seeks to explain the location dynamics of manufacturing activity and the local development implications of these dynamics
3
Approaches to Industrial Geography: Conventional Theoretical Approaches Radical Theoretical Approaches
4
Conventional Theoretical Approaches Rooted in Neoclassical models and theories Competition is the regulator of economic behavior that maximizes individual efficiency and social welfare Free competition prevails The competitive process itself sorts out the most profitable location pattern Focuses solely on economic variables like transportation and labor costs ignores history, political economy and social processes
5
Radical Theoretical Approaches Considered ‘radical’ because they offer different ‘world views’ of the capitalist processes compared to neoclassicism Radical theories recognize contradictory tendencies within capitalism Competitive processes do not automatically guarantee socially desirable outcomes Unless regulated, competition generates unstable and unfair outcomes
6
Radical Theoretical Approaches Economic behavior, including locational behavior has to be understood in terms of the forces of political economy Certain corporations have considerable power Abilities to modify and manipulate the locations and markets in which they operate
7
Contemporary Approaches Draw from multiple theories Some stress universal tendencies in location behavior Others give greater priority to local context and contingency
