Group ENVIRONMENTAL ASPECTS IN BUSSINES STRATEGY. THE EXPERIENCE IN ARLITA
2
Group Since 1991 OPTIROC ÁRIDOS LIGEROS, S.A. have been using hazwaste in substitution of traditional fuels.
3
Group Starting in 1991 Waste Management Permission is obtained. Storage plant is built up. First test are made. Several modifications are made in burners and fuel injection systems. Smokegas is successfully controlled to test pollutant emissions. Project development
4
Group From 1992 Waste oil consumption is increased. Other industrial wastes ( solvents, water, cutting oil, emulsions) are also used. Waste oil, and other waste products are used as additives. Important development of the “hazwaste market” Project development
5
Group Reception, control and analysis Pretreatment, mixing... Storage Pumping and use as fuel or additive The process Technical aspects
6
Group Continuous emission control Periodical emissions control on the smokegas An official register system is carried out Waste analysis and emission controls results have to be sent to the Environmental Authority The process The process Environmental controls
7
Group What advantages can be obtained by using HAZARDOUS WASTES as additives and fuels in LWA process? to decrease energy cost and to obtain a net income from hazardous waste management activity Advantages and disadvantages
8
Group And what will be the disadvantages? More difficult control of the production process : less production? Stonger control from the environmental authorities. Waste Management Permission, emissions, etc. More personnel required More facilities and equipment Advantages and disadvantages
9
Group And, concerning Environment Advantages: –Proper hazwaste management, assuring that their elimination respects health, security and environment: Hazwaste analysis and control Gas time residence into the kilns (more than 2 sec.) High temperatures (>1.200 ºC) Waste Management Permission. Etc.
10
Group More… Contribution to the economic and social development by using hazwaste fuels instead of fossil fuels. Lower emission of some pollutants (i.e.SO 2 ) And, concerning Environment
11
Group Disadvantages – NIMBY – NIMBY effect. Fear to waste incineration emissions –Risk of potential soil and groundwater contamination –Higher emission of certain pollutants (i.e. Cl, Heavy Metal, etc.) And, concerning Environment
12
Group To the Environmental Authorities : –It is clear that a positive, open, transparent attitude, has to be taken. –The accomplishment of the legal regulations must be continuously demonstrated How to present the matter?
13
Group And to the customer and public? – Open attitude, giving information about process and security, pollution prevention and environmental management systems,etc.. – Closed, reserved position : trying to maintain the use of hazwastes as a confidential matter. How to present the matter?
14
Group To be considered: –Public opinion, and local authorities: Favourable to waste incineration? Concerned about environment, and energy saving? Educated in waste management systems? How to decide?
15
Group To be considered: –Waste management systems and other previous experiences Demonstrations against incineration plants. Attitude of ecologist groups? How to decide?
16
Group To be considered: – Market Has the “ green product ” a good selling? Will the customer appreciate the “green point”? Will they have a suspicious attitude about a product that has been made with “toxic, dangerous and hazardous wastes” ? How to decide?
17
Group Our decision has been: –Open ant transparent relationship with the authorities. –Reserved attitude with costumers ARLITA EXPERIENCE
18
Group Our decision was based on: –Very bad experience in previous incineration projects (even with domestic waste), with strong public opposition. –Active ecologist groups, incineration being their favourite topic at the moment ARLITA EXPERIENCE
19
Group More... –Low environmental education level in most of the public and potential market –Very poor market for “green products” ARLITA EXPERIENCE
20
Group Then, you decide »Thank you
