IDEALFirst DEALFirst gives researchers accelerated access to key journal articles Using an article-by-article publishing process, IDEALFirst electronically posts individual articles on IDEAL as they become available, without waiting for work to be finalized on other materials required to complete a traditional issue of the journal in which an article is to appear. This means that subscribers have access to articles long before the print edition or even the electronic version of the completed journal issues is available. One hundred twenty-five journals, with publication frequencies ranging from quarterly to monthly, are participating in the IDEALFirst article-by-article publishing initiative.

21. How to Search for Words and Phrases There are several ways to enter your search terms. The simplest way is to enter a word into the first 'Enter Search Terms' box in the third part of the search form. The system can also search for several words at once or a phrase. If you enter two words with just space between them, this is treated as implying the OR operator between words. So the search protein structure is treated as protein OR structure (see the section on Search Operators for information on "or", "and" and other operators). To search for a phrase, enclose your terms in double quotes. The search "protein structure" will be treated as protein AND structure with no words between. If you enter one or more words or phrases, you can separate them by commas, where each comma represents the fuzzy OR. For example myristylation, hepatocyte will search for entries containing myristylation or hepatocyte andtheir stemmed variations.

22. Author Name(s) Within the IDEAL database, the format of author names is {firstname} {lastname}, e.g., K. J. JUNG. Wild Card / Truncation Any character string may be truncated using wildcards, e.g., BIOCHEM*. The characters ? and * can be used as a wild card. You can use ? to represent individual variable characters within a string, and * to match multiple characters within a string. This allows you to broaden a search. Within a character string, ? is used as the wild card for a single character, e.g., CON?OY. Thus electro* finds articles containing electro, electron, electronic, electromagnetic, etc. You can use * to invoke truncation anywhere within the expression. Numbers (including decimal points and negatives) can be searched for. To retrieve alternate spellings or multiple forms of a word, use the wild cards.

23. Using the Search Operators Use search operators / Boolean Logic to refine your search. The AND operator selects documents that contain all of the search words or phrases. eg. "pharmaceutical companies" AND stock. The OR operator selects documents that contain at least one of your search words or phrases. eg.electron OR proton The NOT modifier can be used to exclude information. eg.sex NOT drugs
