The Threat of Viruses All computers get viruses Protect your computer Use Sophos - supplied by the college - or another virus application. Don’t open suspicious file attachments. (eg. files with.pif,.com,.scr extensions.) BACKUP! BACKUP! BACKUP!

NOTE Only install one anti-virus program on your computer - otherwise you will experience “conflict” problems.

Backup your Documents Always backup important files. Leave a copy of the files on your computer and back up to a Flash Drive or CD or to your personal space on our server. You never know when your hard drive might crash, leaving you with problems accessing a very important paper.

Protecting your Windows Computer! XP and Vista Users: turn your firewall on. Windows updates should be set to automatically update…otherwise you may be susceptible to security vulnerabilities or viruses which may slow down the network and cause major problems to your computer. Set a strong password on your computer (including for the administrator account).

Green Computing Please visit the following website to learn more about Green Computing at Colby http://www.colby.edu/eag/pag/pagcomputer. html A few things to consider: Print double sided. 23 Technological Ethics: Colby enforces the Digital Millennium Copyright Act http://www.colby.edu/administration_cs/its/policies/index.cfm Copying or sharing software is illegal without licenses such as the Microsoft Campus License Agreement. --Please abide by all copyright statements. --Downloading large files decreases performance of the network for everyone. --MP3s are illegal if you don’t own the music.

Recording Industry Files Suit Against Individual Students Think twice about installing any peer-to-peer file sharing applications such as Kazaa make sure the server function is disabled do not download copyrighted material Contact local computer store for removal - there will be a fee. See the ITS web page for more information. www.colby.edu/administration_cs/its/policies/copyright2.c fm
