National Initiative Big Lottery Grant Awarded for 3yrs to help develop services o VIPA o Open days/information events o New logo o Services for partners and children o New 0845 local call rate business number o Free-phone 0800 helpline number for members

3 Health Challenges Health Challenges attributed to Service  2000+ NGVFA MEMBERS (veterans & families) Veterans, partners and children have all reported health problems  Physical Problems Fibromyalgia Irritable Bowel Syndrome Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/Reduced Mobility Osteoporosis/Osteopenia Hypo/hyper Thyroidism  Psychological Problems Paranoia Psychotic Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Personality Disorder Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Clinical Depression (suicide attempts)

4 GULF 1991 Veteran Sergeant in TA/Parachute Regiment  Broke back1989 parachuting advised unable to walk again; fully recovered in 12 months.  Ran 3 – 5 miles daily  Ran 1 mile in 9 minutes carrying 45lb rifle.  Weight training daily Health issues/accepted conditions attributed to Service in Gulf War  Auto Immune Disease  Acute Vaccination Reaction  Gulf War Syndrome  Fibromyalgia  Crush Fracture Lumber Vertebrae  Irritable Bowel Syndrome  Effects of Pyridostigmin  Chronic Fatigue Syndrome  Major Depression  Post Traumatic Stress Disorder  Etc. 1991 2007

5 What Help Is Needed?  More treatment options  More counselling (As a result a unique PTSD clinic for service personnel has been set up & is based in Hull)  Access to ‘priority treatment’  More medical info & GP support  More family support
