1.Current code structure used for over 40 years. 2.The first two characters identify the specific FEHB plan. 3.The third character identifies the plan option and whether enrollment is for Self-only or Family. 4.Without additional coding options, projected to run out of available codes by CY 2008. 5.Edits in most systems only allow certain codes to be used, so system modifications required even if we kept three characters and added coding options. 1.All fields within the code are alpha-numeric. 2.The first three characters identify the specific FEHB plan. The first two characters will be used for existing plans. The third character will not be used at this time (coded as “0”, zero) and will provide a buffer if the need exists in the future. 3.The fourth and fifth character will identify the rating area for the specific plan. 4.The sixth character will identify the plan option. 5.The last character will designate Self-only or Family or some other tiered system (e.g. Self Plus One). 6.Proposed implementation in CY 2008.
