3 3 Mental Health Landscape 70,000 adults and 6,500 young people will have experienced a mental health problem in the last week. 20% total impact of disease (WHO). Cost of £10.7 Billion per-year to Scotland (SAMH). Levels of well-being in Lanarkshire similar to national average despite socio-economic challenges.

4 4 Material and relative deprivation. Low educational attainment. Unemployment. Environment: poor housing, poor resources, violence Adverse life events. Poor support networks. Poor physical health. 5 5 Vision, Principles, Context We wish to see a North Lanarkshire where we all understand that there is no health without mental health, where we know how to support and improve our own and other’s mental health and well-being and act on that knowledge, and where our flourishing mental health and well-being contributes to a healthier, wealthier, fairer, smarter and safer Lanarkshire……people have capacity for change and are able to achieve productive change both in how they feel and how they live their lives. Delivery through both mental health and health and well-being partnerships. Regional, national and international collaborations. 8 8 GIRFEC & Support for Parenting Strategy. Ante-natal screening & support. Baby massage; community mothers – attachment. Play @ home; home learning environment Mental health curriculum delivered. Self-harm prevention protocols developed for schools; pupil support teachers trained. Increased access to school counselling. In & out of school progammes – meaning and purpose and reduced anti-social behaviour. Look after and accommodated young people. Young people in transitions. 12 12 Preventing Common Mental Health Problems Building capacity. Increasing access for low level, high demand treatments, self-help, social prescribing, healthy reading and stress-less at tiers 0,1&2. Reducing inequalities, high risk groups. Choose Life National awareness campaign delivered locally. Public Awareness Campaign to Reduce Suicide ‘Suicide: don’t hide it, talk about it. National training programme over 5,000 people trained is suicide prevention training in Lanarkshire. HEAT 5 exceeded. Pathways for assessment and treatment for people presenting with suicidal ideas National telephone supports Breathing Space (50,000 calls per-year) and Samaritans. www.chooselife.net Preventing Common Mental Health Problem, Suicide and Self-harm

13 13 Improving the Quality of Life for People with Mental Health Problems: Road to Recovery www.elament.org.uk 1 st level change (INDIVIDUAL) : Values, conditions and environments that support recovery. 2 nd level change (COMMUNITY): creating the conditions in community that maintain recovery including public attitudes, increasing access, reducing barriers and supporting connections.
