_______________’s Hurricane Booklet
A hurricane is a huge storm! It can be up to 600 miles across and have strong, spiraling winds at speeds of 75 to 200 mph. 1

Each hurricane usually lasts for over a week, traveling 10-20 miles per hour over the open ocean.
Hurricanes gather heat and energy through contact with warm ocean waters. That’s why they are likely to form in the Caribbean Sea. 2 3

Hurricanes rotate in a counter-clockwise direction around an "eye." The center of the storm, or "eye," is the calmest part. It has only light winds and fair weather. Evaporation from the seawater increases their power. 4 5

rain bands eye wall The eye is surrounded by the eye wall. The eye wall contains the fastest and most violent winds. The rain bands are the bands of thunderstorms circulating outward from the eye. When they come onto land, the heavy rain, strong winds and large waves can cause great damage to buildings, trees and cars. 6 7
