Tests to be Administered: Elementary Schools Grade 3: Math, Reading, Science & History (one answer document) Grade 4: Math, Reading (one answer document) & Virginia Studies (separate answer document) Grade 5: Math, Reading & Science (one answer document) & U.S. History to 1877 (separate answer document) Math 3, 4 & 5 includes the plain English version of the test.

Tests to be Administered: Middle Schools Grade 6: Math, Reading (one answer document) & U.S. History from 1877 (separate answer document) Grade 7: Math, Reading (one answer document) & Civics & Economics (separate answer document) Grade 8: Math, Reading & Science (separate answer document) Grade 7 Pre-Algebra students will also take Math 8 (separate answer document) Grade 8 Algebra I students will be tested online

Main Changes: Grades 3-8 The combined test booklet has been discontinued. Each subject has a separate test booklet. The writing questions on the Grade 3 English test have been eliminated. The test covers the Reading SOLs for grades K-3. The break incorporated into the Reading 3 test remains but the break can be any break as defined by the school.

Calculators There are changes in calculator usage for the grade 4-8 tests: Grade 3: no calculators allowed Grade 4: a four function calculator may be used in part 2 of the Math 4 SOL Grade 5: a four function calculator may be used in part 2 of the Math 5 SOL and on the Science 5 SOL

Calculators Grade 6: A scientific calculator may be used on part 2 of the Math 6 SOL Grade 7: A scientific calculator may be used on part 2 of the Math 7 SOL Grade 8: A scientific calculator may be used for the entire Math 8 SOL. Either a scientific calculator or a four function calculator may be used on the Science 8 SOL. A graphing calculator needs to be provided for Grade 8 students taking the Algebra I SOL online. Pages 30-32 lists the allowable manipulatives for all of the SOL tests.

Tests to be Administered: High Schools End of Course Tests for students in: World Geography, World History II, U.S. & Virginia History, Earth Science, Biology, Chemistry, Algebra I, Algebra II (2001 Revised), Geometry and Reading 11 (2002). Retests for students needing verified credits in all of the above plus Algebra II (2001), Reading 11 (1995), World Geography (1995), World History II (1995), U.S. & Virginia History (1995) Math 8 and Reading 8 tests for students pursuing a modified standard diploma (only available in paper/pencil form)

Tests to be Administered: High Schools Which test should be given if there is more than one version of the test? For Algebra II and/or Reading 11: If the student is currently enrolled in one or both of the courses or was enrolled in either of the courses in the first semester they must take Algebra II (2001 revised) or Reading 11 (2002). If they took and passed either course prior to this school year they must take Algebra II (2001) or Reading 11 (1995) For the Social Studies tests: if the student took and passed the course prior to the 2003-2004 school year they take the 1995 version of the test, else they take the 2001 version of the test. There should be very few students taking 1995 versions of the social studies tests.

Tests to be Administered: High Schools DRHS & GHS are administering all of their tests online. CHS is administering everything online except Geometry for Geometry Part 2 students. THS is administering everything online except Reading 11 and Geometry and their retests. Administer all expedited retests online.

Schedule Elementary and Middle Schools: Test window is from May 8 through June 2, 2006. All answer documents must be shipped on June 2. Please schedule your check-in with Judy. Check-in begins May 25 and ends May 31. Please submit your testing schedule to Judy as soon as it is finalized. High Schools Paper/Pencil window: May 8-11. Check-in begins on May 11 and answer documents will be shipped no later than May 15. Schedule your check-in with Judy. Online window is from May 15-June 2. Expedited retests can be administered beginning on May 22 through June 20. Please submit your schedule to Judy as soon as it is finalized. Remediation/Recovery Available for Grade 4 students that failed the Math 3 and/or Reading 3 SOL last spring or Grade 6 students that failed the Math 5 and/or Reading 5 SOL last spring. You should have a list of eligible students. Grid Section Y on the Grade 4 or Grade 6 answer document in the appropriate places.

Training Examiners Page 8 of the TIM has an excellent chart to use for reference when training your examiners. Teachers, aides, substitutes and trusted volunteers may be used as examiners as long as they receive training. Remember create an agenda and an attendance sign in sheet. Keep them in your records.

Training examiners Make sure each examiner has an Examiners Manual. Notify Judy if you need extra Examiner Manuals. Make sure that examiners are trained to read the directions as printed in the manual. For example:

Adjustments Think of adjustments this way: You are seeking legitimate ways to exclude potential failing scores from the calculation of your school’s pass rate. There are two types of adjustments SOA: which deals with the calculation of Virginia accreditation rates. AYP: which deals with the calculation of U.S. Annual Yearly Progress rates under the No Child Left Behind Act. AYP adjustments are not used with Writing SOL tests.

Adjustments…continued SOA Failing scores are excluded from the calculation if the criteria are meet in one of the following areas: Transfer Limited English Proficient

SOA Adjustment-Transfer An Elementary or Middle School student is an SOA Transfer if they entered school from outside a Pittsylvania County school on or after September 27, 2005. A High School student on a block schedule is an SOA Transfer if they entered school from outside the state (this includes private schools and home schools) on or after February 10, 2006. A High School student in a year long class, like Governors School English 11, would be an SOA Transfer if they enter on or after September 27, 2005. High School students that earned an English 11 credit in a school outside the division but test to earned the verified writing credit may be considered an SOA Transfer.

SOA Adjustment-LEP A student is eligible for an SOA-LEP adjustment if they are an LEP students in levels 1, 2,3 or 4 AND they have been a student in Virginia public schools for less than 11 semesters. You will have to count the current semester for the May tests.

Adjustments Do Not grid the LEP bubble unless the student has been labeled as LEP in section S or in the Pre-ID label.

AYP Adjustment: if the student entered your school on or after October 1, 2005 A: from another school in the county B: from another school in the state C: from a school outside the state, including private and home schools D: LEP and their first year in U.S. schools

Grid if the student has passed the English 11 class but is retesting in order to earn a verified writing credit. IMPORTANT: grid on the SECOND CHANCE TEST for students in an English 11 class but taking the second form of the test. DO NOT grid retest on the first test.

Other Sections…continued Section Z: Testing Status-tells why the test was not taken or not completed. High schools do not have testing status 2, 3 or 12. Testing Status 12: Use for elementary or middle school students participating in the VGLA. We do not have any students using the VGLA for science or social studies.

More on Additional Test Codes This is from a grade 8 answer document. Retest, Expedited and D-Code only have meaning for high school students taking the grade 8 tests for the MSD. Grades 3-8 have the SELP button in the Reading area. Grid SELP if the student used the SELP test as a proxy for the Reading SOL. You have been given a list of students in your schools using the SELP as a proxy. You do not have to grid a testing status for Reading if the SELP button is gridded.

Other information Read to sessions must be recorded. Your materials should have packs of test booklets that says on the cover sheet that the forms may be used for read to sessions. This guarantees that all of the students have the same form number. In emergencies you may use test booklets from the spiral packages as long as you make sure that the form numbers on the booklets used are the same. Marks in a booklet and examiner transfer answers must be verified by a second school official.
