2 Working life in Finland –some points Only 20% (or even less) of job openings are on the open labour market Approx. 80% of job openings are hidden  there is a need for a new employee, but..  no resources (time, etc.) to start a recruitment process and therefore..  a person will be hired as soon as a suitable candidate contacts the organisation with an open application Part time work usually requires excellent skills in Finnish  Non-academic work Employers are used to applicants contacting them directly Dont’ be shy –be active! Finnish labour market situation challenging at the moment

3 Career Planning vs. Self-knowledge  Being aware of your decision making process values & interests  Identifying your hopes and personal goals  Analyzing your strengths and weaknesses What skills need to be developed  Outlining/mapping out your skills and resources  What motivates you?  Identifying your typical role? What do you want to avoid? What type of work would you enjoy? Knowledge -> Action

4 Finding your ideal job-what to consider (source: Windmills programme) PURPOSE Identify how important work is to you personally. ROLES Decide what kind of work suits you best. Do you like working with people, ideas or practical things? ORGANISATION Think about the size and type of organisation you prefer to work in. Large or small? In industry or in an office? CAREER MOTIVATION What motivates you most.Is it money? Recognition? Power? Security? Using your skills? A combination of all of these? What do you want from a job? ENVIRONMENT Do you prefer working alone or as part of a team? In a quiet room or a busy office? Regular or irregular hours? At a computer or out in the field? Motivating and organising or advising and problem-solving? SECTOR Try to pin down the type of sector you would prefer to work in. Check too for any signs of growth in your preferred sector and where the main openings are to be found. SKILLS Finally ask yourself what key skills and qualifications your ideal job will require. Check your conclusions against the list of your strongest skills.
