Agnes Lundborg Open Seminar 9 th of April 2003 in Uppsala on the SweGrid project PANDA computing “a tiny specification”

GSI accelerator Radioactive Ion Beams Nuclear Physics Plasma Physics Antiproton Physics (PANDA) HESR High Energy Storage Ring Momentum resolution stoch.cooling e- cooling Circulating Energy range Maximum Luminosity Target pellet or clusterjet Universal Detector Charged particle tracking Micro-vertexing for open charm Identification of High rate Sophisticated and fast trigger scheme PANDA Properties of hadrons in a dense nuclear medium Charmonium Spectroscopy Strange baryons in nuclear field Glueballs and Hybrids

PANDA software Object Oriented Programming ROOT – analysis package Geant4 – detector simulation TARA – Partial Wave Analysis DPM – hadronic background generator Simulation Detector design! Physics goals! Ideas! Possibilities!

In the next couple of years: About 10 times a year each time 50-100 CPUs (1 GHz) 10-20 days MONTE CARLO PRODUCTION RUNS MCrun Software design Detector design Analysis of MCdata Panda software is ready for a first large MC run already this fall to gather experience with the GRID, evolve physics goals, detector design and software

DATA STORAGE Geant4 (detector output) +Reconstructed Events (for a selected channel) DPM (background events) Over 10 Tbyte in the next few years Storage time in the order of 5 years, first on disk, for weekly access from all institutes involved in PANDA

ParallellizationBetween but not within events Data BaseYet unspecified Primary memory for simulation <1 Gbyte (currently 200 Mbyte) SoftwareIdea, software system design, coarse physics timelinegoals and detector setup Ready for large scale simulation (now/soon!) Simulation, detector design, physics goal, and software development (iterative process) First data in 2009 Analysis of data, for example using partial wave analysis (computationally demanding) 2001 2009 2010 2003
