7 7 “a-g” Subject Requirements UC vs. CSU Course Requirement Comparison The University of California and California State University have agreed to adopt the same pattern of courses; however, there will continue to be different admissions practices in some cases. Community college courses must be noted on the self-report, reference course number and where course was taken i.e. Bus 109 Intro to Business @ DVC. For CSU document grade for 2 semesters (Fall & Spring twice) For UC document grade only once (semester taken)

8 8 Examination Requirements (for students entering 2006) SAT Reasoning Test or ACT for UC/CSU: UC uses highest scores in critical reading, math and writings + 2 subject tests. CSU uses critical reading + math (writing score not included) UC/Two Different Subject Tests - Example of subject test: English literature, foreign language, science, or social studies, math II C Check individual school for accepted completion date of testing requirement Cal Poly Nov 1 st - last SAT date Send scores directly from ACT or College Board for CSU use #3594 will send to all CSU’s UC send to each campus to which you apply

9 9 Sending a Transcript? UC/CSU applications require self report. Do not send transcripts at time of application. Schools will notify student if requesting 7 th semester transcript (January). Send AP Test Scores, transcript from high school in June and any community college work with Intent to Register. 10 10 Sending a Transcript? Grades must be maintained in the senior year or the acceptance may be rescinded. If an academic class is dropped after the application has been submitted, the student must notify each university to which he/she has applied. Transcript can be obtained from the Registrar for $2.00 each. Student must fill out transcript request form and provide self-addressed stamped envelope.

11 11 UC/CSU Grade Point Average  Calculated beginning in 10th grade in approved courses only (a-g)  Additional grade points given for grades of C or better in approved honors, Advanced Placement  Additional grade points given for UC- transferable college courses  Repeating classes – report higher grade only for repeat of D, F grades

12 12 UC Personal Statement Questions  3 short answer questions totaling 1000 words  2 answers must be limited to approx. 200 words each  3 rd answer should be given extended answer of 600 words  Total 1000 points  You may choose your extended answer question

Potential to Contribute: Tell us about a talent, experience, contribution, or personal quality you will bring to the University of California. 3. Open Ended: Is there anything you would like us to know about you or your academic record that you have not had the opportunity to describe elsewhere in this application. 4. Prepare answers ahead of time in word document, do not compose on line.

14 14 UC Eligibility Index A student meets the Scholarship Requirement if he or she achieves the GPA (2.8 minimum in California) and test score total indicated in the Eligibility Index. Example:2.80 – 2.84 = 2860 3.40 – 3.44 = 1882 Refer to Eligibility Index on line.

15 15 CSU Eligibility Index A student meets the scholarship requirement if he or she achieves the GPA of 2.0 (minimum) and test score indicated in the eligibility index. You will be required to meet higher admission requirements for impacted campuses and programs.

16 16 What is the eligibility index? Use this formula to see if your grade point average and test scores meet the required eligibility index: SAT Scores: (GPA x 800) + your SAT Total Your high school GPA (All approved college prep “a-g” courses taken in 10 th,11 th and 12 th grades) My index is _________ ACT Scores: (GPA x 200) = 10 x ACT Composite) Your high school GPA (All approved college prep “a-g” courses taken in 10 th, 11 th and 12 th grades) My index is _________ *The CSU will not include the SAT or ACT writing scores in the Eligibility Index for 2006-07 admissions decision. California residents must have a minimum index of 2900 using SAT scores or 694 using ACT scores. Non-California residents must have a minimum index of 3502 using SAT scores or 842 using ACT scores. 17 17 CSU Eligibility Index  Eligibility does not mean admission – must be competitive  Check specific campuses for impacted majors and programs

18 18 CSU Entry Level Math (ELM) English Placement Test (EPT ) Exception through STAR test or SAT score of 550 or better in math and critical reading Math exception may also be achieved in successful completion of senior level math class beyond Algebra 2 Non-Exempt students will be required to take placement test in Spring on a CSU campus

19 19 Transcripts and Self Report UC/CSU require self report at time of application Obtain unofficial transcript from Career Center for reference How to read transcript for UC/CSU: All “a – g” courses will need to be reported for application purposes. However, only “a-g” courses taken in 10 - 11 grade will be computed for UC/CSU GPA. The estimated UC/CSU GPA can be found on the transcript: CP Weighted. Courses with a P in front of them denote college prep and H denotes honors credit.These are the only courses to be reported. Each university will take only a certain number of H courses.

21 21 Eligibility in the Local Context for the UC The top four percent of students at each participating California high school are designated UC-eligible. UC has identified ELC students and assigned an ELC number. SRVHS ELC students have already been notified and a file has been started by the UC system. Students must still complete Subject and Examination Requirements ELC information available at www.ucop.edu/sas/elcwww.ucop.edu/sas/elc

22 22 Application Cycle ● UC Fall filing period is between November 1 – 30. May go on line Oct 1, but can not submit before Nov 1. ● CSU October 1 – November 30 ● CSU Cal Poly Early Decision Oct 31 Deadline DO NOT WAIT UNTIL NOVEMBER 30 TO APPLY ● Students should keep each campus informed of any changes in information reported on application. ● Check at time of application for housing recommendation ● Students must respond to all inquiries for information from each campus.

23 23 Application Cycle, cont’d Each campus reviews applications in a comprehensive manner. Fee UC & CSU $55 each campus Most admission decisions for freshmen are sent out between March 1 and March 30. Many campuses have online access to admissions decisions. Students must submit their intent to register (to one campus only) by May 1. Request final transcript from Registrar by graduation date.

26 26 Applying to Private Institutions Be mindful regarding Thanksgiving and winter break. Counselors and registrar will not be able to process letters of recommendation or transcripts after December 16th, if needed for January deadline.
