UCSD Overview Research Impact: Research Funding = $730M (2005/6) –NSF Ranks UCSD 7 th in Federal R&D expenditures –The Milken Institute ranks UCSD 6th among the world’s leading universities in the strength of its biotechnology research publications and 8th in the number of biotech patents issued. Economic Impact: UCSD is an engine for regional economic growth. UCSD faculty and alums have spun-off close to 250 local companies, including over a third of the region’s biotech companies.

Applications are solicited for: –Fellows –Mentors and Host Campuses Applications are evaluated on a competitive basis by UC and industry experts drawn from: –President’s Board on Science and Innovation –IUCRP Steering Committee –IUCRP Executive Committees –Other members of the research community UC Discovery Fellows: Selection Process

Fellows: –Advanced degree and exceptional competence in a field of science or engineering –Vision for role of the research university in regional and international economies – and the ability to communicate it Mentors: –Positioned within UC to enable change at the industry- university interface (i.e. Dean, Division Director, Vice Chancellor) –Provide strong professional development opportunity for Fellow UC Discovery Fellows: Selection Criteria
