Mathematical systems consist of … Definitions –“Well defined” & consistent –Common vs. Mathematical meaning Terms are not always descriptive. Examples: –Rational (able to reason) vs. Irrational (lacking the power to reason) –Real (existing, genuine) vs. Imaginary (exists in the imagination only and therefore does not exist)

Mathematical systems consist of … Definitions Axioms –Properties that are accepted to be true but cannot be proven or disproven with previous definitions, axioms, or theorems (i.e. accepted truths). –Examples: If a = b and b = c, then a = c. (transitive) Two points determine a unique line.

Mathematical systems consist of … Definitions Axioms Theorems –Statements that can be proven with previous definitions, axioms, and/or theorems. –Examples: The Pythagorean Theorem You cannot divide by zero..9999… = 1

Foundations for MTH 112 (Trigonometry) Algebra –MTH 60, 65, 95, 111 Geometry –Triangles & Circles

Challenge Problem (just to get you thinking) Find the ratio of the rotational velocity of the earth at 45 degrees latitude to the rotational velocity of the earth at the equator. Written solution (not just an answer). –Include labeled diagram. –Include all algebraic steps of the solution. –Include explanations as needed.
