6/3/2015 17 University of Utah Health Sciences Center Often Overlooked Education Categories u Courses Directed Managing and organizing the content of a course May include arranging faculty participation Does not refer to the teaching itself Example: Systemic Pathology Course Director - planned, organized, executed and evaluated the course. A three quarter (180 hr) course for 100 second year medical students including lectures, small group case discussions, problem sessions, gross and microscopic laboratories, radiographic correlation’s and practical clinical lab skills. Administration included coordination of over 40 faculty. u Didactic Lectures Formal educational lectures to internal students May be one time or recurring Often overlooked because faculty choose not to track Do not confuse with presentations Example: Nurse Practitioner Students’ Lecture, University of Utah College of Nursing, “Overview of Pediatric Dermatology”

6/3/2015 18 University of Utah Health Sciences Center Often Overlooked Education Categories u Clinical Teaching Teaching activities within a clinical environment May be any and all trainee levels –Health, Medical, Nursing or Pharmacy Students –Residents –Fellows Settings: Outpatient, Inpatient, Operating Rooms, Reading Rooms Example: General Pediatric Ward Attending approximately 16 weeks per year. Trainees include hospitalist fellows, general pediatric residents, rotating medical students, and visiting students from surrounding states. u Laboratory Teaching Teaching activities within a laboratory setting May be any and all trainee levels –Graduate Students –Post Doctoral Fellows –Undergraduate Students Example: Taught microarray techniques on a weekly basis to all graduate students within Human Genetics laboratories (approximately 12 students per session).
