PROFESSIONAL BACHELOR PROGRAM IN HONOR HEALTH PHYSICS with emphasis on Environmental Health Physics Physics Department Texas Southern University Launching Fall 2008 Funding through Nuclear Regulatory Commission grant No. NRC-38-07-495

The ONLY Health Physics Program in the Greater Houston Area! SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE!

Pre-Medical Physics Track in Collaboration with M. D. Anderson Radiation Biology at M. D. Anderson Internships at M. D. Anderson Priority acceptance at the M.S. Medical Physics Program at M. D. Anderson for the very best students.

Specialization courses in Nuclear Engineering on-line at UT-Austin

What is Health Physics? It means Radiation Protection. The aim is to protect the people and the environment from the harmful effects of radiation, while at the same time benefiting from its exploitation. Health physicist principally work at facilities where radionuclides or ionizing radiation are used.

Why Study Health Physics? There is a strong and increasing demand for Health Physicists. On the Health Physics Society web site http://hps.org/govtrelations/humanca pital.html http://hps.org/govtrelations/humanca pital.html an article named “Human Capital Crisis in Radiation Safety” was published.

It is a professional bachelor degree with a bar exam certification available.

Certified HP Salary Survey 2007 Bachelors Health Physics average: $106,908 Min: $83,750 Max: $131,250 http://www.hps.org/publicinformation/ hpcareers.html

Why there is a dramatically increasing demand? The approaching because of many reasons world oil craze created conditions for Nuclear Energy Renaissance. Indeed, 28 new power plant applications are presently under consideration in the US creating a huge demand for health physicists and nuclear engineers. In the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the retirement will open about 10000 jobs by 2012. Many environmental HP work in radioanalitical laboratories.

Where the health physicist can work? Industry Power plants Accelerator facilities National laboratories Radioanalitical laboratories Medical Centers Education Research Regulatory enforcement and occupation safety

What can we offer? Scholarships (more detailed information can be found on our website). http://physics.tsu.edu http://physics.tsu.edu Pre-medical track as well as an optional specialization available. Collaboration with MD Anderson. Nuclear Engineering specialization through collaboration with UT Austin. Pending proposal for Radiochemistry course in collaboration with UT Austin.

Our Program It is designed as a comprehensive curriculum almost at graduate level, combining academic education with very practical skills. It provides core training in radiation physics and radiation detection beneficial for every radiation related professional. The specialized courses starts at the fifth semester.

Specialized Health Physics Core Courses Basic concepts of atomic and radiation physics using partly the book of James Turner, “Atoms, Radiation and Radiation Protection” (1 semester). Environmental Radioactivity (1 semester) Introductory Nuclear Physics by K. Krane (2 semesters) Radiation detection and measurement by Knoll (3 semesters) Radiation detection lab (3 semesters lab) Radiation protection and dosimetry by M. Stabi ( 2 semesters)

Upcoming core courses Radiochemistry Radiology emergency management

Optional Courses Radiation Biology (M. D. Anderson) Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Lab Nuclear Engineering (through partnership with UT-Austin) Introductory Medical Physics Medical Imaging

Summer Schools and Internships Many opportunity exist: UT-Austin M. D. Anderson Medical Center Houston A&M College Station University of North Texas Oak Ridge National Lab

Pre-Medical Physics Program Basic concepts of atomic and radiation physics using partly the book of James Turner, “Atoms, Radiation and Radiation Protection” (1 semester). Introductory Nuclear Physics by K. Krane (2 semesters) Radiation detection and measurement by Knoll (3 semesters) Radiation detection lab (3 semesters lab) Introduction to Medical Physics (1 semester) Radiation protection and dosimetry by M. Stabi ( 1 semesters) Radiation Biology (1 semester) Introduction to Medical Imaging (1 semester) Radiation Therapy (1 semester)

Our Aim! To maintain highly recognized program. The graduates to be able to continue in the top M.S. programs in Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering or Medical Physics.

Program Supporting Faculty Dr. Elena Stefanova (Nuclear Physicist) – program initiator and developer Dr. Mark Harvey (High-energy physicist with specialization post-doc at M.D. Anderson Mr. Boris Tsenov - health physicist at UH; adjunct instructor at TSU A PhD in Health Physics is going to be hired

Accomplishments of Physics Program Have Recruited Nationally/Internationally Prominent Physics Faculty (starting Sept. 2006) http://physics.tsu.edu/People/People.p hp#Faculty   D. Bessis, Math. Physics   C. J. Tymczak, Comp. Physics   Dr. Handy Carlos
