5 Exercise One: The Organization of the Newspaper 1.Please write out the order of different sections you can find in a recent issue of an English newspaper. 2.Can you list out some effective devices in English newspapers to help you locate different news articles?

6 Headlines and Resources Analyzing Headlines: 1. Straight-forward headlines: clear direct statement about the subject of the article Ex: “South Asia quake death toll tops 30,000”

7 2. Headlines using word play: Journalists use word play or pun to catch readers’ eyes. Ex. “New Orleans’ buzz begins to return”

8 Headlines that require more background knowledge: understanding cultural allusions and idiomatic expressions could be important. Ex. “New wave of détente between Taipei and Beijing is under way”

13 1. Scanning Using your background knowledge to understand the main ideas of a news story without using a dictionary. Headlines Keywords

14 2.Opening paragraph 1. Keywords and main idea in topic sentence. ( S+V…) 2. More details, statements to support the main idea. 3. Concluding sentence for hints of further development.

15 3. Beyond the lead 1. Detailed information to clarify the main points. 2. Introduce new but less important information.

16 4. Understanding words in Context -Never use your dictionary when you can guess the meaning of the words. -Guess the meaning from reading the sentence. -Looking for explanatory phrases or sentences. -Looking for synonyms of keywords and rephrased main theme.
