Welcome to the First Meeting of the An International Scoping Study of a Neutrino Factory & Super-beam Facility
2
23 Sep 2005P J Dornan - ISS Meeting CERN A Little History –NuFact03 –2004 –April 2005 Desire for a new World Design Study towards a future Neutrino Factory - to succeed Studies I, II and IIa in the US - failed to get support Plan for a proposal to 2 nd call in EU FP6 design study programme - 2 nd call cancelled John Wood – CEO CCLRC(RAL) – requests a ‘Scoping Study’ for a future neutrino factory – and promises support
3
23 Sep 2005P J Dornan - ISS Meeting CERN May 2005 –Meeting in London to start the process (~40 people came at short notice) –Committee – S Geer, Y Kuno, V Palladino, K Peach charged with setting up the organisation PhysicsAcceleratorDetector Programme Committee Chair Stakeholders Chair – PJD Physics – Yori Nagashima Accelerator – Mike Zisman Detector – Alain Blondel ‘Stakeholders’ still to be defined

23 Sep 2005P J Dornan - ISS Meeting CERN Web Site http://hepunx.rl.ac.uk/uknf/wp4/scoping/ Details of working groups Documents Mailing List - please subscribe saying which group(s) you wish to join – or just subscribe to the general list Registration for the CERN Meeting - those registering will be automatically included on the mailing lists

23 Sep 2005P J Dornan - ISS Meeting CERN Aims → Final Report A one year study –More details in the document on the web site - but primarily To review the physics case for an accelerator neutrino complex post- T2K and Nova To compare options - and complementarities - including costs –Super-beam + detector –Neutrino Factory + detector Final Report - presentation to NuFact06 and a written document Sep 2006 Result to lay foundations for a full CDR for such a facility by 2009/10 - and to form the basis of a proposal (early 2007) to the EU P7 programme for funding for such a CDR
6
23 Sep 2005P J Dornan - ISS Meeting CERN Why 2009/10 for CDR –LHC will have produced first results –LHC will have been paid for –PEP2 & Tevatron programmes will have ended – so funds should become available for new projects But there will be many calls –Linear Collider, S-LHC…. The Neutrino Community must have a coherent well-argued plan at that time to obtain support for a major project for second half of next decade –time is short
7
23 Sep 2005P J Dornan - ISS Meeting CERN Support The plan was presented to ECFA on June 23 (RECFA) & June 24 (PECFA) and received strong support - but ECFA has no money or resources! -Financial/Resource Support this is increasing - mostly within established programmes US-NFMC, BENE, JNFC, UKNF, CCLRC, PPARC, CERN much goodwill towards the project Negotiations are on-going for direct support --- Now we need the workers

23 Sep 2005P J Dornan - ISS Meeting CERN Structure –Aim to maintain a broad geographical distribution of responsibilities – a truly international study Working Groups –Each has a Convenor who has formed a Council of experts to direct the effort ISS Open Collaboration Meetings –There will be major ISS meetings every 3 months CERNSep 22 – 24, 2005 –Provisionally JapanJan 23 – 25, 2006 RALApril 24 – 29, 2006 – to coincide with April BENE meeting UC, IrvineAugust 21, 22 (just before NuFact06)

23 Sep 2005P J Dornan - ISS Meeting CERN This Meeting CERN Sep 22 – 24 Aims - more from Alain, Mike & Yori –Map out the programme for the coming year for each of the groups. –More specific (& realistic) goals –Understand how to combine accelerator & detector activities (& costing) - for the physics goals –Engage with the community and encourage them to join and contribute –Great opportunities Many developments since previous US Study 2
13
23 Sep 2005P J Dornan - ISS Meeting CERN To Conclude Following this initiative the world neutrino community has a golden opportunity to devise its plans for future neutrino activities - but it requires a very concentrated effort in a very short time So please contribute to the working groups to make it a success –Everyone welcome - Contact Physics group - Yori Nagashima - nagay@snow.dti2.ne.jp Accelerator Group - Mike Zisman - mszisman@lbl.gov Detector Group - Alain Blondel - Alain.Blondel@cern.ch –or me Peter Dornan – P.Dornan@imperial.ac.uk
