Background Management/ Administration underpinned by access to spatial information Many countries have developed SDI at national, state and local levels Most of these initiatives stop at the coastline –Institutionally –Spatially Identified deficiency in availability and accessibility of marine and coastal spatial information

Research Problem Land Administration System (includes a cadastral component) Spatial Data Infrastructure (includes cadastral data ) Marine Administration System (includes a cadastral component) Coastal Zone Marine and Coastal management needs a seamless SDI that can include spatial data from land, marine and coastal environments.

5. Research Objectives Demonstrate the need for an SDI that will apply to marine and terrestrial data Examine and compare initiatives in marine and terrestrial spatial data coordination and management (SDI) Develop and test a ‘seamless’ SDI model End result to facilitate the inclusion of marine and coastal spatial data into SDI models

6. Marine Spatial Data 94% regard spatial data as essential or important 10’s of millions spent on data collection each year Wide variety of data formats, standards, completeness, reliability Difficulty in finding appropriate and accessible data and metadata

7. Marine/ Coastal SDI People Access Network Policy Standards Data What is a Marine or Coastal SDI? Will have the same general components as terrestrial, however unique challenges offshore (Bartlett 2004) (Rajabifard and Williamson, 2001)

9. Summary Need to improve marine and coastal management SDI can provide the framework for improved access to spatial data from marine and terrestrial environments Current SDI model can be used but needs to be adapted to suit differences
