Claudius Galen Who, what, where, when, why!? Born in Pergamum on September 22, 131 and died in 201 Educated by his father Traveled at an early age through Europe to gain education on medicine Became the physician to emperors of Rome Treated wounded Gladiators. Gave him a chance to try surgery Dissected apes instead of humans Discovered arties carried blood Believed in 4 humours theory. (red blood, yellow bile, phlegm, black bile) Owned own pharmacy which contained medicine involving animals and plants

Paracelsus Who, what, where, when, why Real name was Aureolus von Hohenheim Was born near Zurich Left home at age 14 to learn medicine Got degree at University of Ferrara Appointed physician of the city of Basel in 1527 Claimed to be “monarch of all physicians” His colleges did not get along with him Rejected Galen’s work Believed that a poison that caused a disease could be cured by the same poison giving in the proper amount and form Some known him as the father of modern medicine and others know him as a homicidal doctor
