How Many of You are Dreaming of This...

Because We are Living in This…

Fortunate Climate In New Brunswick, we can experience both of these images; from the very snowy/cold (-30 and lower) to the very sunny/hot (+35 and above), and all in between!

Stereotypes of Climate In Canada? In England? In the States of Nevada and Florida? In Africa? In China?

Stereotypes Because… In reality, these countries/states all share similar climates, the difference is: 1) The similar climates may occur at different/opposite times of the year 2) One climate may be more dominate in another country/state

Continued… Stereotypes originate due to the lack of knowledge about climate and weather…

Climate and Weather In this chapter we will look at: What factors influence Canada’s climate and climate regions and how those factors influence where Canadians choose to live.

Terminology Meteorology – The science of weather; one of the first sciences to be developed. Climate – How we describe the patterns of weather conditions over a long term. Ex: Summer described as hot and sunny.

What Are the Elements of Climate? Just like we can turn up or down a thermostat to adjust the warm or cold temperature, the earth can do the same to adjust/control warm, cold, humid or dry climates.

Across the Curriculum… Look at the words in the last slide that are italicized… These words normally correspond with climate… Meteorology is full of descriptive words. Any descriptive language used in poems or other writings are usually related to geographic features.

Across the Curriculum Continued Your Assignment… 1.Choose your favorite climate in the seasonal year in New Brunswick (winter, spring, summer, fall). 2.Write about a day outside observing that climate using descriptive words like warm, cold, humid, dry. Describe the colors you see, the textures, what you smell etc.

Global Factors on Climate Latitude: – Increased latitude = Solar Radiation Decreases (colder it gets) – Increased latitude = Increase Daylight Hours

Global Factors on Climate Con’t Air Masses: Takes on Characteristics – Maritime Tropical: Warm Water= Air: warm/moist – Maritime Polar: Cold Water= Air: cold/moist – Continental Arctic: Cold Land= Air: cold/dry – Continental Tropical: Desert= Air: hot/dry

Air Masses Con’t Canada: Weather changes due to changing pattern of air masses. – Ex: Summer= Maritime Tropical air masses travel north giving warm, humid weather

Air Masses Con’t Most air masses travel WEST to EAST in Canada… However… Jet Stream: a high, fast wind that flows east across North America near Canada/US border.

Air Masses Con’t… WHY DOES A JET STREAM FLOW EAST TO WEST? – Coriolis Effect: The rotation of the earth from west to east

More Global Factors Ocean Currents: – Currents move heat and cold around the world – Air passing over an ocean current is influenced by that current.

IMPORTANT Remember to look in your notes at the diagram we drew from the board. Including: How ocean currents affect the air masses, which are carried on land with the jet stream, therefore changing our weather on land.
