Integrating Persistent Links into Course-Related Website Rita Lo Manager, Information Commons & Library Systems Bankier Library Brookdale Community College Revised August 2012
2
Integrating Persistent Links into Course-Related Website Outline of Presentation What are persistent links? Why the need to use persistent links? How to create persistent links for off-campus access: Step 1: Identify the links to the full-text article Step 2: Verify / Add authentication / proxy server prefix information Step 3: Post persistent links for students to retrieve Proxy server authentication login List of available subscription and licensed resources: Examples: OPAC (online Public Access Catalog), EBSCO, InfoTrac, JSTOR, ProQuest, Encyclopaedia Britannica, Facts on File, LexisNexis
3
Integrating Persistent Links into Course-Related Website What are persistent links? Permanently linked URLs that connect users directly to full-text articles by clicking on an embedded link (including library proxy server) within a website Enabling students to read relevant articles from within ANGEL without separate authentication and without searching the databases themselves Also known as “durable” or “stable”, but may not necessarily be permanent links Useful for creating syllabi, online reading lists, bibliographies, and other research tools
4
Integrating Persistent Links into Course-Related Website Why the need to use persistent links? Assist instructors in compliance with licensing and copyright law regulations that govern the use and dissemination of subscription and licensed resources when downloading full-text articles and making them available through a courseware system or departmental websites Ease of access and simplicity of verification process when viewing full-text articles from off-campus Eliminate the need to make multiple copies for in class distribution Available to students 24/7 Adaptable tool to include in online courses
5
Integrating Persistent Links into Course-Related Website How to create persistent links for off-campus access? Persistent links for off-campus can only be accessed where authentication is available Proxy server provides authentication by verifying that a user (currently enrolled students, faculty and staff) has a relationship with the Brookdale Community College Bankier Library If a Web page is created using persistent links and a proxy server prefix is not included, users attempting to access full-text articles will either be denied or asked for an unavailable password The proxy server prefix format is as follows: http://0-target-server.library.brookdalecc.edu/remainder-of-url Integrating full-text articles into an ANGEL or HTML page can be implemented in three easy steps, regardless of databases searched
6
Integrating Persistent Links into Course-Related Website Three easy steps Step1: Identify the link to the full-text article Step 2: Verify or add authentication / proxy server prefix information Step 3: Post and verify the persistent link URLs for students to retrieve
7
Integrating Persistent Links into Course-Related Website Step 1: Identifying the link Different names are used to identify persistent links. The vendor EBSCO uses the term persistent link while others use bookmark, article link, durable link or stable URL to refer to the same item. Once a full-text article is located, search the record for the persistent link information.
8
Integrating Persistent Links into Course-Related Website Step 2: Verify / add proxy server prefix The proxy server prefix contains two separate bits of information. The first bit is the number zero follow by a dash, i.e., http:// becomes “ http://0- ” The second bit is the name of the library server: “.library.brookdalecc.edu ” Example: http://0- search.ebscohost.com.library.brookdalecc.edu/login.aspx?direct=true&db=aph&AN=206253 21&site=ehost-live Example 2: http://0-find.galegroup.com.library.brookdalecc.edu/itx/infomark.do?contentSet=IAC- Documents&docType=IAC&type=retrieve&tabID=T002&prodId=AIM&docId=A152513402&use rGroupName=brookdalecc&version=1.0&searchType=BasicSearchForm&source=gale
9
Integrating Persistent Links into Course-Related Website Step 3: Post and verify the persistent link URL Insert the persistent links created in steps 1 and 2 into an ANGEL or HTML page When students click on the persistent link, they will be asked to verify by entering their last name and their 14-digit library barcode. The assigned barcode is located on the back of the College ID card. Students may call the library Help Desk at 732-224-2443 should they encounter errors such as Inability to locate patron record Patron record contains expired expiration date Patron record contains invalid barcode Etc …
10
Integrating Persistent Links into Course-Related Website Proxy server authentication Persistent link procedure will work both on and off-campus. Off-campus users will be able to use the links after authentication has been established
